1
And the Word of Yahuah came to Yonah son of Amittai, saying:
2
“Rise. Go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry out against it, for their evil has come up before My face.”
3
But Yonah rose to flee to Tarshish from before the face of Yahuah. And he went down to Yafo and found a ship going to Tarshish. And he paid its fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from before the face of Yahuah.
4
But Yahuah hurled a great ruach upon the sea, and there was a great storm upon the sea, and the ship was about to be broken apart.
5
And the sailors were afraid, and each ish cried out to his elohim. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten it from upon them. But Yonah had gone down into the innermost part of the vessel, and he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
6
And the master of the ship came near to him and said to him: “What is this, sleeper? Rise. Call upon your Elohim. Perhaps the Elohim will consider us, and we shall not perish.”
7
And each ish said to his companion: “Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know because of whom this evil has come upon us.” And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Yonah.
8
Then they said to him: “Tell us, we pray, because of whom has this evil come upon us? What is your work? And from where do you come? What is your land? And from what people are you?”
9
And he said to them: “I am an Ivri, and I fear Yahuah, Elohim of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10
Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him: “What is this that you have done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from before the face of Yahuah, because he had told them.
11
And they said to him: “What shall we do to you, that the sea may become calm for us?” For the sea was going and becoming more stormy.
12
And he said to them: “Lift me up and hurl me into the sea, and the sea shall become calm for you. For I know that because of me this great storm has come upon you.”
13
But the men rowed hard to return to dry land, and they were not able, for the sea was going and becoming more stormy against them.
14
And they cried out to Yahuah and said: “Please, Yahuah, do not let us perish because of the being of this ish, and do not place upon us innocent blood. For You, Yahuah, have done according to what You desired.”
15
And they lifted up Yonah and hurled him into the sea. And the sea ceased from its raging.
16
Then the men feared Yahuah with a great fear. And they sacrificed a sacrifice to Yahuah and vowed vows.
17
And Yahuah appointed a great fish to swallow Yonah. And Yonah was in the inward parts of the fish three days and three nights.
