1
But it was exceedingly evil to Yonah, and he became angry.
2
And he prayed to Yahuah and said: “Please, Yahuah, was this not my word while I was still in my own land? Therefore I fled beforehand to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate El, slow to anger and abundant in Covenant-Faithfulness, and relenting concerning evil.
3
And now, Yahuah, take, I pray, my being from me, for my death is better than my life.”
4
And Yahuah said: “Is it good for you to be angry?”
5
And Yonah went out from the city and sat east of the city. And there he made for himself a sukkah and sat beneath it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.
6
And Yahuah Elohim appointed a qiqayon plant, and caused it to rise over Yonah, to become shade over his head, to deliver him from his evil. And Yonah rejoiced over the qiqayon with great joy.
7
But Elohim appointed a worm at the rising of the dawn on the next day, and it struck the qiqayon, and it withered.
8
And it came to pass when the sun rose that Elohim appointed a scorching east ruach. And the sun struck upon the head of Yonah, and he became faint. And he asked for his being to die and said: “My death is better than my life.”
9
And Elohim said to Yonah: “Is it good for you to be angry over the qiqayon?” And he said: “It is good for me to be angry even unto death.”
10
And Yahuah said: “You had compassion upon the qiqayon for which you did not labor and which you did not cause to grow, which came into being in one night and perished in one night.
11
And should I not have compassion upon Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than one hundred twenty thousand Adam who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many beasts?”
