1
In the second year of Daryavesh the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the Word of Yahuah came by the hand of Chaggai the prophet to Zerubbavel son of She’alti’el, governor of Yehudah, and to Yehoshua son of Yehotzadaq, the high kohen, saying:
2
Thus says Yahuah of Hosts: “This people says: ‘The time has not come, the time for the House of Yahuah to be built.’”
3
And the Word of Yahuah came by the hand of Chaggai the prophet, saying:
4
“Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this House lies desolate?
5
And now, thus says Yahuah of Hosts: Set your heart upon your ways.
6
You have sown much and brought in little. You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are not filled with drink. You clothe yourselves but no one is warmed. And the one who earns wages earns wages for a bag with holes.”
7
Thus says Yahuah of Hosts: “Set your heart upon your ways.
8
Go up to the mountain, bring wood, and build the House. And I will delight in it, and I will be glorified,” says Yahuah.
9
“You looked for much, and see, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew upon it. Why?” declares Yahuah of Hosts. “Because of My House, which lies desolate, while each ish of you runs to his own house.
10
Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its produce.
11
And I called for drought upon the land and upon the mountains, and upon the grain, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon what the ground brings forth, and upon Adam, and upon beast, and upon all the labor of the hands.”
12
Then Zerubbavel son of She’alti’el, and Yehoshua son of Yehotzadaq, the high kohen, and all the remnant of the people heard the voice of Yahuah their Elohim and the words of Chaggai the prophet, as Yahuah their Elohim had sent him. And the people feared before the face of Yahuah.
13
Then Chaggai, messenger of Yahuah, spoke in the Message of Yahuah to the people, saying: “I am with you,” declares Yahuah.
14
And Yahuah stirred the ruach of Zerubbavel son of She’alti’el, governor of Yehudah, and the ruach of Yehoshua son of Yehotzadaq, the high kohen, and the ruach of all the remnant of the people. And they came and did work in the House of Yahuah of Hosts, their Elohim,
