1
And it came to pass after many days that the Word of Yahuah came to Eliyahu in the third year, saying: “Go, show yourself to Achav, and I will give rain upon the face of the earth.”
2
And Eliyahu went to show himself to Achav. And the famine was severe in Shomron.
3
And Achav called Ovadyahu, who was over the House. And Ovadyahu feared Yahuah exceedingly.
4
And it came to pass, when Izevel cut off the prophets of Yahuah, that Ovadyahu took one hundred prophets and hid them by fifty in a cave, and sustained them with bread and water.
5
And Achav said to Ovadyahu: “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the wadis. Perhaps we may find grass and keep the horses and mules alive, and not cut off any of the beasts.”
6
And they divided the land between them to pass through it. Achav went by one way alone, and Ovadyahu went by another way alone.
7
And as Ovadyahu was on the way, see, Eliyahu met him. And he recognized him and fell upon his face and said: “Is this you, my master Eliyahu?”
8
And he said to him: “I am. Go, say to your master, ‘See, Eliyahu.’”
9
And he said: “What have I sinned, that you are giving your servant into the hand of Achav to put me to death?
10
As Yahuah your Elohim lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent to seek you. And when they said, ‘He is not here,’ he caused the kingdom and the nation to swear that they had not found you.
11
And now you say, ‘Go, say to your master, “See, Eliyahu.”’
12
And it shall be, when I go from you, that the Ruach of Yahuah will carry you where I do not know. And I will come and declare it to Achav, and he will not find you, and he will put me to death. But your servant has feared Yahuah from my youth.
13
Was it not declared to my master what I did when Izevel put the prophets of Yahuah to death, how I hid one hundred men from the prophets of Yahuah by fifty in a cave and sustained them with bread and water?
14
And now you say, ‘Go, say to your master, “See, Eliyahu.”’ And he will put me to death.”
15
And Eliyahu said: “As Yahuah of Hosts lives, before whose face I stand, surely this day I will show myself to him.”
16
And Ovadyahu went to meet Achav and declared it to him. And Achav went to meet Eliyahu.
17
And it came to pass, when Achav saw Eliyahu, that Achav said to him: “Is this you, troubler of Yisra’el?”
18
And he said: “I have not troubled Yisra’el, but you and the House of your father, because you have forsaken the commandments of Yahuah and you have walked after the Baalim.
19
And now, send and gather all Yisra’el to me at Mount Karmel, and the four hundred fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at the table of Izevel.”
20
And Achav sent among all the sons of Yisra’el and gathered the prophets to Mount Karmel.
21
And Eliyahu drew near to all the people and said: “How long will you limp between two opinions? If Yahuah is Elohim, walk after Him. And if Baal, walk after him.” And the people did not answer him a word.
22
And Eliyahu said to the people: “I alone remain a prophet of Yahuah, but the prophets of Baal are four hundred fifty ish.
23
And let them give us two bulls. And let them choose for themselves one bull and cut it in pieces and place it upon the wood, but put no fire. And I will prepare the other bull and place it upon the wood, but put no fire.
24
And you shall call upon the name of your elohim, and I will call upon the Name of Yahuah. And it shall be: the Elohim who answers by fire—He is Elohim.” And all the people answered and said: “The word is good.”
25
And Eliyahu said to the prophets of Baal: “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many. And call upon the name of your elohim, but put no fire.”
26
And they took the bull that was given to them and prepared it. And they called upon the name of Baal from the morning even until midday, saying: “Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and there was no one answering. And they limped around the altar that had been made.
27
And it came to pass at midday that Eliyahu mocked them and said: “Call with a great voice, for he is an elohim. Perhaps he is occupied, or relieving himself, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.”
28
And they called with a great voice and cut themselves according to their custom with swords and spears, until blood poured out upon them.
29
And it came to pass, when midday had passed, that they prophesied wildly until the time of the going up of the grain offering. But there was no voice, and there was no one answering, and there was no attention.
30
And Eliyahu said to all the people: “Draw near to me.” And all the people drew near to him. And he repaired the altar of Yahuah that had been torn down.
31
And Eliyahu took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Yaaqov, to whom the Word of Yahuah had come, saying: “Yisra’el shall be your name.”
32
And with the stones he built an altar in the Name of Yahuah. And he made a trench around the altar, enough to contain two seah of seed.
33
And he arranged the wood and cut the bull in pieces and placed it upon the wood. And he said: “Fill four jars with water and pour it upon the ascending offering and upon the wood.”
34
And he said: “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said: “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time.
35
And the water went around the altar, and he also filled the trench with water.
36
And it came to pass at the time of the going up of the grain offering that Eliyahu the prophet drew near and said: “Yahuah, Elohim of Avraham, Yitzchaq, and Yisra’el, let it be known this day that You are Elohim in Yisra’el, and that I am Your servant, and that by Your Word I have done all these things.
37
Answer me, Yahuah. Answer me, so that this people may know that You, Yahuah, are Elohim, and that You have turned their heart back again.”
38
And the fire of Yahuah fell and consumed the ascending offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
39
And all the people saw, and they fell upon their faces and said: “Yahuah—He is Elohim! Yahuah—He is Elohim!”
40
And Eliyahu said to them: “Seize the prophets of Baal. Let not one ish from them escape.” And they seized them. And Eliyahu brought them down to the wadi Qishon and slaughtered them there.
41
And Eliyahu said to Achav: “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of the abundance of rain.”
42
And Achav went up to eat and to drink. And Eliyahu went up to the top of Karmel, and he bowed himself to the earth and placed his face between his knees.
43
And he said to his young man: “Please go up. Look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said: “There is nothing.” And he said: “Return seven times.”
44
And it came to pass at the seventh time that he said: “See, a small cloud like the palm of an ish is rising from the sea.” And he said: “Go up, say to Achav: ‘Harness and go down, lest the rain restrain you.’”
45
And it came to pass in a little while that the heavens became dark with clouds and ruach, and there was a great rain. And Achav rode and went to Yizre’el.
46
And the hand of Yahuah was upon Eliyahu, and he girded up his loins and ran before Achav as far as the entrance of Yizre’el.
