1
My son, if you have become guarantor for your neighbor, if you have struck your hand for a stranger,
2
you are snared by the words of your mouth. You are captured by the words of your mouth.
3
Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor: go, humble yourself, and press your neighbor.
4
Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.
5
Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6
Go to the ant, you sluggard. See her ways and become wise.
7
Though she has no ruler, no overseer, and no governor,
8
she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.
9
How long will you lie down, sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep?
10
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to lie down,
11
and your poverty shall come like a traveler, and your need like an armed ish.
12
A worthless Adam, an ish of crookedness, walks about with a twisted mouth.
13
He winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his fingers.
14
Perversity is in his heart. He devises evil at all times. He sends out contentions.
15
Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly. In a moment he shall be broken, and there shall be no healing.
16
Six things Yahuah hates, and seven are an abomination to His being:
17
exalted eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18
a heart that devises plans of crookedness, feet that hasten to run toward evil,
19
a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sends out contention between brothers.
20
My son, guard the commandment of your father, and do not forsake the Torah of your mother.
21
Bind them continually upon your heart. Tie them around your neck.
22
When you walk, it shall lead you. When you lie down, it shall guard you. And when you awaken, it shall speak with you.
23
For the commandment is a lamp, and the Torah is light, and corrections of discipline are the way of life,
24
to guard you from the evil ishah, from the smooth tongue of the foreign woman.
25
Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelids.
26
For because of a prostitute, an ish is reduced to a loaf of bread, and the ishah of another ish hunts a precious being.
27
Can an ish take fire into his bosom and his garments not be burned?
28
Can an ish walk upon burning coals and his feet not be scorched?
29
So is the one who goes in to the ishah of his neighbor. None who touches her shall be innocent.
30
They do not despise a thief if he steals to fill his being when he is hungry.
31
Yet if he is found, he shall repay sevenfold. All the wealth of his house he shall give.
32
The one who commits adultery with an ishah lacks heart. The one who does it destroys his own being.
33
A wound and dishonor he shall find, and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34
For jealousy is the rage of an ish, and he shall not spare in the day of vengeance.
35
He will not lift his face toward any ransom, nor be willing though you multiply the gift.
