1
After this Iyov opened his mouth and cursed his day.
2
And Iyov answered and said:
3
“Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said, ‘A male has been conceived.’
4
Let that day be darkness. Let Eloah not seek it from above, and let no light shine upon it.
5
Let darkness and death-shadow redeem it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the heat-darkness of day terrify it.
6
That night—let thick darkness take it. Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; let it not enter into the number of the new moons.
7
See, let that night be barren; let no joyful cry enter it.
8
Let those who curse a day pierce it— those prepared to awaken Liwyatan.
9
Let the stars of its dawn become dark. Let it wait for light, but there be none; and let it not see the eyelids of dawn,
10
because it did not shut the doors of my mother’s womb or conceal trouble from my eyes.
11
Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not expire when I came forth from the belly?
12
Why did knees receive me? And why were there breasts for me to suck?
13
For now I would have lain down and been quiet; I would have slept, and then there would be rest for me,
14
with sovereigns and counselors of the earth who built ruins for themselves,
15
or with rulers who possessed gold, who filled their houses with silver.
16
Or why was I not hidden like a miscarriage, like infants who never saw light?
17
There the wicked cease raging, and there those weary in strength rest.
18
Together the prisoners are at ease; they do not hear the voice of the taskmaster.
19
Small and great are there, and the servant is free from his master.
20
Why does He give light to one in misery, and life to those bitter of being—
21
those waiting for death, though it does not come, who dig for it more than for hidden treasures;
22
those rejoicing unto exultation, who are glad when they find the grave?
23
Why is light given to a mighty one whose way is concealed, whom Eloah has enclosed?
24
For my sighing comes before my bread, and my groanings pour out like waters.
25
For the terror I dreaded came upon me, and that which I feared entered me.
26
I was not at ease, and I was not quiet; I had no rest, yet agitation came.”
