1
“Can you draw Liwyatan with a hook, or lower its tongue with a cord?
2
Can you place a reed-rope in its nose, or pierce its jaw with a thorn?
3
Does it multiply pleas to you? Or speak tender words to you?
4
Does it cut a covenant with you? Will you take it as a servant forever?
5
Will you play with it as with a flying creature, or bind it for your maidens?
6
Will companions bargain over it? Will they divide it among merchants?
7
Can you fill its skin with barbed irons, or its head with fishing spears?
8
Place your palm upon it; remember the battle—you shall not do it again.
9
Behold, his expectation is false; is he not cast down even at the sight of it?
10
None is so fierce that he dares awaken it. And who then is he who can stand before My face?
11
Who has come before Me, that I should repay? Whatever is beneath all the heavens is Mine.
12
I shall not keep silent concerning its limbs, or the matter of its mighty acts, or the favor of its arrangement.
13
Who has uncovered the face of its garment? Who enters within the double fold of its bridle?
14
Who has opened the doors of its face? Terror surrounds its teeth.
15
Its channels of shields are majesty, shut up with a tight seal.
16
One approaches another, and no ruach comes between them.
17
Each clings to its brother; they take hold and do not separate.
18
Its sneezings flash light, and its eyes are like the eyelids of dawn.
19
From its mouth torches proceed; sparks of fire escape.
20
From its nostrils smoke proceeds, like a blown pot and reeds.
21
Its breath kindles coals, and flame proceeds from its mouth.
22
Strength lodges in its neck, and sorrow dances before its face.
23
The folds of its flesh cling together, cast firm upon it, not moved.
24
Its heart is cast firm like stone, cast firm like the lower millstone.
25
When it raises itself, mighty ones fear; because of its breaking they purify themselves.
26
The sword that reaches it does not stand, nor spear, dart, or armor.
27
It considers iron as straw, bronze as rotten wood.
28
The son of the bow does not make it flee; slingstones are turned to straw before it.
29
Clubs are considered straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance.
30
Beneath it are sharp points of potsherd; it spreads a threshing-sledge over mire.
31
It makes the deep boil like a pot; it makes the sea like a vessel of ointment.
32
Behind it a path shines; one would consider the deep to be gray hair.
33
Upon the dust there is none ruling over it, made without dread.
34
It beholds everything high; it is sovereign over all sons of pride.”
