1
And Sarai, the ishah of Avram, had not brought forth children for him. And she had a Mitzrit maidservant, and her name was Hagar.
2
And Sarai said to Avram, “See now, Yahuah has restrained me from bringing forth. Please go in to my maidservant; perhaps I may be built through her.” And Avram listened to the voice of Sarai.
3
And Sarai, the ishah of Avram, took Hagar the Mitzrit, her maidservant, after Avram had dwelt ten years in the land of Kena’an, and gave her to Avram her ish as a woman for him.
4
And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became lightly regarded in her eyes.
5
And Sarai said to Avram, “My wrong is upon you. I gave my maidservant into your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, I became lightly regarded in her eyes. May Yahuah judge between me and you.”
6
And Avram said to Sarai, “See, your maidservant is in your hand. Do to her what is good in your eyes.” And Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her presence.
7
And the messenger of Yahuah found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.
8
And he said, “Hagar, maidservant of Sarai, from where have you come, and where are you going?” And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of Sarai my mistress.”
9
And the messenger of Yahuah said to her, “Return to your mistress and humble yourself beneath her hand.”
10
And the messenger of Yahuah said to her, “Multiplying, I will multiply your seed, and it shall not be numbered because of its abundance.”
11
And the messenger of Yahuah said to her: “See, you have conceived, and you shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Yishma’el, because Yahuah has heard your affliction.
12
And he shall be a wild man; his hand shall be against all, and the hand of all against him; and before the face of all his brothers he shall dwell.”
13
And she called the name of Yahuah who spoke to her, El Ro’i, for she said, “Have I truly seen here the One who sees me?”
14
Therefore the well was called Be’er-Lachai-Ro’i. See, it is between Qadesh and Bered.
15
And Hagar brought forth a son to Avram. And Avram called the name of his son, whom Hagar brought forth, Yishma’el.
16
And Avram was eighty-six years old when Hagar brought forth Yishma’el to Avram.
