1
And Avraham journeyed from there toward the land of the Negev, and dwelt between Qadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
2
And Avraham said concerning Sarah his ishah, “She is my sister.” And Avimelekh king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
3
And Elohim came to Avimelekh in a dream by night and said to him, “See, you are as a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is joined to an ish.”
4
But Avimelekh had not come near her. And he said, “Adonai, will You also kill a righteous nation?
5
Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself also said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the cleanness of my hands I have done this.”
6
And Elohim said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you did this, and I also withheld you from sinning against Me. Therefore I did not permit you to touch her.
7
And now return the ishah of the man, for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that dying you shall die—you and all who are yours.”
8
And Avimelekh rose early in the morning and called all his servants, and spoke all these words in their hearing. And the men feared greatly.
9
And Avimelekh called Avraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought upon me and upon my kingdom a great sin? Deeds that should not be done, you have done with me.”
10
And Avimelekh said to Avraham, “What did you see, that you did this thing?”
11
And Avraham said, “Because I said, ‘Surely there is no fear of Elohim in this place, and they will kill me because of my ishah.’
12
And truly she is my sister—the daughter of my father, though not the daughter of my mother—and she became my ishah.
13
And it came to pass, when Elohim caused me to wander from the house of my father, that I said to her, ‘This is your covenant-faithfulness that you shall do for me: at every place where we come, say concerning me, “He is my brother.”’”
14
And Avimelekh took sheep and cattle, male servants and female servants, and gave them to Avraham; and he returned Sarah his ishah to him.
15
And Avimelekh said, “See, my land is before you. Dwell wherever it is good in your eyes.”
16
And to Sarah he said, “See, I have given your brother one thousand pieces of silver. See, it is for you a covering of the eyes before all who are with you, and before all; and you are vindicated.”
17
And Avraham prayed to Elohim, and Elohim healed Avimelekh, and his ishah, and his female servants, and they brought forth children.
18
For Yahuah had completely closed every womb of the house of Avimelekh because of Sarah, the ishah of Avraham.
