1
And there was a famine in the land, apart from the first famine that was in the days of Avraham. And Yitzchaq went to Avimelekh king of the Pelishtim, to Gerar.
2
And Yahuah appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Mitzrayim. Dwell in the land that I tell you.
3
Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. For to you and to your seed I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Avraham your father.
4
And I will multiply your seed like the stars of the heavens, and I will give to your seed all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves,
5
because Avraham listened to My voice and guarded My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My instructions.”
6
And Yitzchaq dwelt in Gerar.
7
And the men of the place asked concerning his ishah. And he said, “She is my sister,” because he feared to say, “She is my ishah,” lest, he said, “the men of the place kill me because of Rivqah,” because she was good in appearance.
8
And it came to pass, when his days there had become many, that Avimelekh king of the Pelishtim looked out through the window and saw, and see: Yitzchaq was showing affection to Rivqah his ishah.
9
And Avimelekh called Yitzchaq and said, “See, surely she is your ishah. How then did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Yitzchaq said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die because of her.’”
10
And Avimelekh said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your ishah, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11
And Avimelekh commanded all the people, saying, “Whoever touches this ish or his ishah shall surely be put to death.”
12
And Yitzchaq sowed in that land and found in that year one hundredfold. And Yahuah blessed him.
13
And the ish became great, and continued becoming greater until he became exceedingly great.
14
And he had possessions of flocks, and possessions of herds, and a great household. And the Pelishtim envied him.
15
And all the wells that the servants of his father had dug in the days of Avraham his father, the Pelishtim stopped up and filled with earth.
16
And Avimelekh said to Yitzchaq, “Go away from us, because you have become much stronger than we.”
17
And Yitzchaq went from there and encamped in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18
And Yitzchaq returned and dug again the wells of water that they had dug in the days of Avraham his father, which the Pelishtim had stopped up after the death of Avraham. And he called their names according to the names that his father had called them.
19
And the servants of Yitzchaq dug in the valley and found there a well of living water.
20
And the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with the herdsmen of Yitzchaq, saying, “The water is ours.” And he called the name of the well Eseq, because they contended with him.
21
And they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. And he called its name Sitnah.
22
And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. And he called its name Rechovot, and said, “For now Yahuah has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”
23
And he went up from there to Be’er-Sheva.
24
And Yahuah appeared to him that night and said: “I am the Elohim of Avraham your father. Do not fear, for I am with you. And I will bless you and multiply your seed for the sake of Avraham My servant.”
25
And he built an altar there and called upon the name of Yahuah, and stretched out his tent there. And the servants of Yitzchaq dug a well there.
26
And Avimelekh went to him from Gerar, and Achuzzat his companion, and Pikhol commander of his army.
27
And Yitzchaq said to them, “Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and sent me away from you?”
28
And they said, “Seeing, we have seen that Yahuah is with you. And we said, ‘Please let there be an oath between us, between us and you, and let us cut a covenant with you,
29
that you will do no evil to us, just as we have not touched you, and just as we have done only good with you and sent you away in peace. You are now blessed of Yahuah.’”
30
And he made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.
31
And they rose early in the morning and swore, each one to his brother. And Yitzchaq sent them away, and they went from him in peace.
32
And it came to pass on that day that the servants of Yitzchaq came and told him concerning the well that they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.”
33
And he called it Shivah. Therefore the name of the city is Be’er-Sheva to this day.
34
And Esav was forty years old when he took as an ishah Yehudit daughter of Be’eri the Chitti, and Basemat daughter of Elon the Chitti.
35
And they became bitterness of spirit to Yitzchaq and to Rivqah.
