1
And Yaaqov lifted his feet and went toward the land of the sons of the east.
2
And he looked, and see: a well was in the field, and see: three flocks of sheep were lying there beside it, because from that well they gave the flocks drink. And the stone upon the mouth of the well was great.
3
And all the flocks would gather there, and they would roll the stone from upon the mouth of the well and give the sheep drink; then they would return the stone to its place upon the mouth of the well.
4
And Yaaqov said to them, “My brothers, from where are you?” And they said, “We are from Charan.”
5
And he said to them, “Do you know Lavan son of Nachor?” And they said, “We know him.”
6
And he said to them, “Is there peace with him?” And they said, “Peace. And see, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep.”
7
And he said, “See, the day is still great; it is not yet time for the livestock to be gathered. Give the sheep drink, and go feed them.”
8
And they said, “We are not able until all the flocks are gathered and they roll the stone from upon the mouth of the well; then we give the sheep drink.”
9
While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with the sheep that belonged to her father, because she was a shepherdess.
10
And it came to pass, when Yaaqov saw Rachel daughter of Lavan, brother of his mother, and the sheep of Lavan, brother of his mother, that Yaaqov drew near and rolled the stone from upon the mouth of the well, and gave the sheep of Lavan, brother of his mother, drink.
11
And Yaaqov kissed Rachel and lifted his voice and wept.
12
And Yaaqov told Rachel that he was the brother of her father, and that he was the son of Rivqah. And she ran and told her father.
13
And it came to pass, when Lavan heard the report concerning Yaaqov son of his sister, that he ran to meet him, embraced him, kissed him, and brought him into his house. And Yaaqov recounted to Lavan all these things.
14
And Lavan said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.” And he dwelt with him a month of days.
15
And Lavan said to Yaaqov, “Because you are my brother, should you serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?”
16
And Lavan had two daughters. The name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
17
And the eyes of Leah were tender, but Rachel was beautiful in form and beautiful in appearance.
18
And Yaaqov loved Rachel, and he said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.”
19
And Lavan said, “It is better that I give her to you than that I give her to another ish. Dwell with me.”
20
And Yaaqov served seven years for Rachel, and they were in his eyes like a few days because of his love for her.
21
And Yaaqov said to Lavan, “Give me my ishah, because my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.”
22
And Lavan gathered all the men of the place and made a feast.
23
And it came to pass in the evening that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Yaaqov, and he went in to her.
24
And Lavan gave Zilpah his maidservant to Leah his daughter as a maidservant.
25
And it came to pass in the morning, and see: it was Leah. And he said to Lavan, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with you? Why then have you deceived me?”
26
And Lavan said, “It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn.
27
Fulfill the week of this one, and we will give you this one also for the service that you shall serve with me yet another seven years.”
28
And Yaaqov did so and fulfilled her week. And he gave him Rachel his daughter to be his ishah.
29
And Lavan gave Bilhah his maidservant to Rachel his daughter as her maidservant.
30
And he also went in to Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served with him yet another seven years.
31
And Yahuah saw that Leah was hated, and He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.
32
And Leah conceived and brought forth a son, and she called his name Reuven, for she said, “Because Yahuah has seen my affliction; surely now my ish will love me.”
33
And she conceived again and brought forth a son, and said, “Because Yahuah has heard that I am hated, He has given me this one also.” And she called his name Shimon.
34
And she conceived again and brought forth a son, and said, “Now this time my ish will be joined to me, because I have brought forth three sons to him.” Therefore his name was called Levi.
35
And she conceived again and brought forth a son, and said, “This time I will praise Yahuah.” Therefore she called his name Yehudah. And she ceased bringing forth.
