1
And Yaaqov heard the words of the sons of Lavan, saying, “Yaaqov has taken all that belonged to our father, and from what belonged to our father he has made all this abundance.”
2
And Yaaqov saw the face of Lavan, and see: it was not toward him as it had been before.
3
And Yahuah said to Yaaqov, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”
4
And Yaaqov sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field, to his flock.
5
And he said to them, “I see the face of your father, that it is not toward me as it was before; but the Elohim of my father has been with me.
6
And you know that with all my strength I have served your father.
7
Yet your father has deceived me and changed my wages ten times, but Elohim did not permit him to do evil to me.
8
If he said, ‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flock brought forth speckled. And if he said, ‘The striped shall be your wages,’ then all the flock brought forth striped.
9
And Elohim has taken away the livestock of your father and given them to me.
10
And it came to pass at the time when the flock conceived that I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream, and see: the male goats mounting the flock were striped, speckled, and mottled.
11
And the messenger of Elohim said to me in the dream, ‘Yaaqov.’ And I said, ‘See, I am here.’
12
And he said, ‘Lift your eyes now and see: all the male goats mounting the flock are striped, speckled, and mottled, because I have seen all that Lavan is doing to you.
13
I am the El of Beit-El, where you anointed the standing pillar, where you vowed a vow to Me. Now rise, go out from this land, and return to the land of your birth.’”
14
And Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, “Is there still any portion or inheritance for us in the house of our father?
15
Are we not regarded by him as foreigners? For he sold us, and consuming, he has consumed our silver.
16
For all the wealth that Elohim has taken from our father belongs to us and to our children. And now, all that Elohim has said to you, do.”
17
And Yaaqov rose and lifted his sons and his women upon the camels.
18
And he drove all his livestock and all his possessions that he had acquired, the livestock of his acquisition that he had acquired in Paddan-Aram, to go to Yitzchaq his father in the land of Kena’an.
19
And Lavan had gone to shear his sheep. And Rachel stole the terafim that belonged to her father.
20
And Yaaqov stole the heart of Lavan the Arami by not telling him that he was fleeing.
21
And he fled, he and all that he had, and he rose and crossed the river and set his face toward the mountain of Gilad.
22
And on the third day it was told to Lavan that Yaaqov had fled.
23
And he took his brothers with him and pursued after him a journey of seven days, and overtook him in the mountain of Gilad.
24
And Elohim came to Lavan the Arami in a dream by night and said to him, “Guard yourself from speaking with Yaaqov from good to evil.”
25
And Lavan overtook Yaaqov. And Yaaqov had stretched out his tent on the mountain, and Lavan with his brothers stretched out theirs in the mountain of Gilad.
26
And Lavan said to Yaaqov, “What have you done, that you stole my heart and carried away my daughters like captives of the sword?
27
Why did you hide yourself to flee and steal away from me, and not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with joy and with songs, with tambourine and with lyre?
28
And you did not permit me to kiss my sons and my daughters. Now you have acted foolishly.
29
It is within the power of my hand to do evil to you, but the Elohim of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Guard yourself from speaking with Yaaqov from good to evil.’
30
And now, going, you have gone because longing, you longed for the house of your father. But why did you steal my elohim?”
31
And Yaaqov answered and said to Lavan, “Because I was afraid, for I said, ‘Perhaps you would tear your daughters away from me.’
32
With whomever you find your elohim, he shall not live. Before our brothers, recognize what is yours with me and take it for yourself.” And Yaaqov did not know that Rachel had stolen them.
33
And Lavan entered the tent of Yaaqov, and the tent of Leah, and the tent of the two maidservants, but he did not find them. And he went out from the tent of Leah and entered the tent of Rachel.
34
And Rachel had taken the terafim and placed them in the saddle of the camel, and sat upon them. And Lavan searched the entire tent but did not find them.
35
And she said to her father, “Let it not burn in the eyes of my adon that I am not able to rise before you, because the way of women is upon me.” And he searched, but did not find the terafim.
36
And Yaaqov burned with anger and contended with Lavan. And Yaaqov answered and said to Lavan, “What is my transgression? What is my sin, that you have pursued fiercely after me?
37
For you have searched all my possessions. What have you found from all the possessions of your house? Set it here before my brothers and your brothers, and let them judge between the two of us.
38
These twenty years I have been with you. Your ewes and your female goats did not miscarry, and the rams of your flock I did not eat.
39
That which was torn by beasts I did not bring to you; I bore its loss myself. From my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night.
40
I was there: by day the heat consumed me, and frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.
41
These twenty years I have been in your house. I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you changed my wages ten times.
42
If the Elohim of my father, the Elohim of Avraham and the Fear of Yitzchaq, had not been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty. Elohim has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and He judged last night.”
43
And Lavan answered and said to Yaaqov, “The daughters are my daughters, and the sons are my sons, and the flock is my flock, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their sons whom they have brought forth?
44
And now, come, let us cut a covenant, I and you, and let it become a witness between me and you.”
45
And Yaaqov took a stone and raised it as a standing pillar.
46
And Yaaqov said to his brothers, “Gather stones.” And they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there upon the heap.
47
And Lavan called it Yegar-Sahaduta, but Yaaqov called it Galed.
48
And Lavan said, “This heap is a witness between me and you this day.” Therefore its name was called Galed,
49
and Mitzpah, because he said, “May Yahuah watch between me and you when we are hidden, each one from his companion.
50
If you afflict my daughters, or if you take women in addition to my daughters, there is no ish with us. See: Elohim is witness between me and you.”
51
And Lavan said to Yaaqov, “See this heap, and see the standing pillar that I have raised between me and you.
52
This heap is witness, and the standing pillar is witness, that I will not cross over this heap to you, and that you will not cross over this heap and this standing pillar to me, for evil.
53
May the Elohim of Avraham and the elohim of Nachor judge between us—the elohim of their father.” And Yaaqov swore by the Fear of Yitzchaq his father.
54
And Yaaqov slaughtered a sacrifice on the mountain and called his brothers to eat bread. And they ate bread and spent the night on the mountain.
55
And Lavan rose early in the morning and kissed his sons and his daughters and blessed them. And Lavan went and returned to his place.
