1
And Dinah, daughter of Leah whom she had brought forth to Yaaqov, went out to see the daughters of the land.
2
And Shekhem son of Chamor the Chivvi, prince of the land, saw her; and he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.
3
And his soul clung to Dinah daughter of Yaaqov, and he loved the young woman, and spoke to the heart of the young woman.
4
And Shekhem spoke to Chamor his father, saying, “Take this young woman for me as an ishah.”
5
And Yaaqov heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. And his sons were with his livestock in the field, and Yaaqov kept silent until they came.
6
And Chamor father of Shekhem went out to Yaaqov to speak with him.
7
And the sons of Yaaqov came from the field when they heard. And the men were grieved, and their anger burned greatly, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Yisra’el by lying with the daughter of Yaaqov; and such a thing should not be done.
8
And Chamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of Shekhem my son longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as an ishah.
9
And intermarry with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
10
And dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade within it, and acquire possessions in it.”
11
And Shekhem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.
12
Increase greatly upon me the bride-price and the gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; only give me the young woman as an ishah.”
13
And the sons of Yaaqov answered Shekhem and Chamor his father with deceit, and spoke because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
14
And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to an ish who has a foreskin, because that would be a disgrace to us.
15
Only by this will we consent to you: if you become like us, by circumcising every male among you.
16
Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
17
But if you will not listen to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.”
18
And their words were good in the eyes of Chamor and in the eyes of Shekhem son of Chamor.
19
And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in the daughter of Yaaqov. And he was more honored than all the house of his father.
20
And Chamor and Shekhem his son came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
21
“These men are at peace with us. Let them dwell in the land and trade within it, and see, the land is broad before them. Let us take their daughters for ourselves as women, and let us give our daughters to them.
22
Only by this will the men consent to dwell with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised, just as they are circumcised.
23
Will not their livestock, their possessions, and all their animals become ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”
24
And all who went out through the gate of his city listened to Chamor and to Shekhem his son, and every male was circumcised, all who went out through the gate of his city.
25
And it came to pass on the third day, while they were in pain, that two sons of Yaaqov, Shimon and Levi, brothers of Dinah, each took his sword and came upon the city securely, and killed every male.
26
And they killed Chamor and Shekhem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from the house of Shekhem and went out.
27
And the sons of Yaaqov came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28
Their flocks, and their herds, and their donkeys, and what was in the city, and what was in the field, they took.
29
And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their women they took captive and plundered, and everything that was in the houses.
30
And Yaaqov said to Shimon and Levi, “You have troubled me, making me odious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Kena’ani and the Perizzi. And I am few in number; and if they gather themselves against me and strike me, I shall be destroyed, I and my house.”
31
And they said, “Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute?”
