1
And Elohim said to Yaaqov, “Rise, go up to Beit-El and dwell there, and make there an altar to El, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esav your brother.”
2
And Yaaqov said to his house and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign elohim that are among you, and purify yourselves, and change your garments.
3
And let us rise and go up to Beit-El, and I will make there an altar to El, who answered me in the day of my distress and was with me in the way that I walked.”
4
And they gave to Yaaqov all the foreign elohim that were in their hands, and the rings that were in their ears; and Yaaqov hid them beneath the terebinth that was by Shekhem.
5
And they journeyed, and the terror of Elohim was upon the cities that were around them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Yaaqov.
6
And Yaaqov came to Luz, which is in the land of Kena’an—that is, Beit-El—he and all the people who were with him.
7
And he built there an altar and called the place El-Beit-El, because there Elohim had revealed Himself to him when he fled from the face of his brother.
8
And Devorah, nurse of Rivqah, died, and she was buried below Beit-El beneath the oak; and its name was called Allon-Bakhut.
9
And Elohim appeared to Yaaqov again when he came from Paddan-Aram, and blessed him.
10
And Elohim said to him, “Your name is Yaaqov. Your name shall no longer be called Yaaqov, but Yisra’el shall be your name.” And He called his name Yisra’el.
11
And Elohim said to him, “I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and an assembly of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come forth from your body.
12
And the land that I gave to Avraham and to Yitzchaq, I will give to you; and to your seed after you I will give the land.”
13
And Elohim ascended from him, from the place where He had spoken with him.
14
And Yaaqov set up a standing pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured out a drink offering upon it, and poured oil upon it.
15
And Yaaqov called the name of the place where Elohim had spoken with him Beit-El.
16
And they journeyed from Beit-El. And there was still some distance to come to Efrat when Rachel began to bring forth, and her labor was hard.
17
And it came to pass, when her labor was hard, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for this also is a son for you.”
18
And it came to pass, as her soul was departing—for she died—that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Binyamin.
19
And Rachel died and was buried on the way to Efrat, which is Beit-Lechem.
20
And Yaaqov set up a standing pillar over her grave. It is the pillar of the grave of Rachel to this day.
21
And Yisra’el journeyed and stretched out his tent beyond Migdal-Eder.
22
And it came to pass, while Yisra’el dwelt in that land, that Reuven went and lay with Bilhah, the concubine of his father; and Yisra’el heard. And the sons of Yaaqov were twelve.
23
The sons of Leah: Reuven, firstborn of Yaaqov; and Shimon, Levi, Yehudah, Yissakhar, and Zevulun.
24
The sons of Rachel: Yosef and Binyamin.
25
And the sons of Bilhah, maidservant of Rachel: Dan and Naftali.
26
And the sons of Zilpah, maidservant of Leah: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Yaaqov who were born to him in Paddan-Aram.
27
And Yaaqov came to Yitzchaq his father at Mamre, at Qiryat-Arba, which is Chevron, where Avraham and Yitzchaq had sojourned.
28
And the days of Yitzchaq were one hundred and eighty years.
29
And Yitzchaq expired and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And Esav and Yaaqov his sons buried him.
