1
And he commanded the one over his house, saying, “Fill the sacks of the men with food, as much as they are able to carry, and place each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.
2
And place my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did according to the word that Yosef had spoken.
3
At the light of morning, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.
4
They had gone out from the city and had not gone far when Yosef said to the one over his house, “Rise, pursue after the men. And when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?
5
Is this not the one from which my adon drinks, and by which he surely divines? You have done evil in what you have done.’”
6
And he overtook them and spoke these words to them.
7
And they said to him, “Why does my adon speak according to these words? Far be it from your servants to do according to this thing.
8
See, the silver that we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Kena’an. How then would we steal silver or gold from the house of your adon?
9
With whichever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also shall become servants to my adon.”
10
And he said, “Now also, let it be according to your words. The one with whom it is found shall be my servant, and you shall be innocent.”
11
And each one hurried and lowered his sack to the ground, and each one opened his sack.
12
And he searched, beginning with the eldest and finishing with the youngest. And the cup was found in the sack of Binyamin.
13
And they tore their garments. And each one loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city.
14
And Yehudah and his brothers came to the house of Yosef, and he was still there. And they fell before him to the ground.
15
And Yosef said to them, “What is this deed that you have done? Did you not know that an ish like me surely knows by divination?”
16
And Yehudah said, “What shall we say to my adon? What shall we speak? And how shall we justify ourselves? Elohim has found the iniquity of your servants. See, we are servants to my adon, both we and the one in whose hand the cup was found.”
17
And he said, “Far be it from me to do this. The ish in whose hand the cup was found, he shall be my servant. And you, go up in peace to your father.”
18
And Yehudah drew near to him and said, “Please, my adon, let your servant speak a word in the ears of my adon, and do not let your anger burn against your servant, for you are as Pharaoh.
19
My adon asked his servants, saying, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
20
And we said to my adon, ‘We have an old father, and a child of his old age, the youngest. And his brother is dead, and he alone remains of his mother, and his father loves him.’
21
And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him.’
22
And we said to my adon, ‘The young man is not able to leave his father, for if he leaves his father, his father will die.’
23
And you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.’
24
And it came to pass when we went up to your servant, my father, that we told him the words of my adon.
25
And our father said, ‘Return, buy for us a little food.’
26
And we said, ‘We are not able to go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down, for we are not able to see the face of the ish unless our youngest brother is with us.’
27
And your servant, my father, said to us, ‘You know that my ishah brought forth two for me.
28
And the one went out from me, and I said, “Torn, he has surely been torn,” and I have not seen him until now.
29
And if you take this one also from before my face, and harm meets him, then you will bring down my gray hair in evil to Sheol.’
30
And now, when I come to your servant, my father, and the young man is not with us—and his soul is bound to his soul—
31
it shall come to pass, when he sees that the young man is not there, that he will die. And your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant, our father, in sorrow to Sheol.
32
For your servant became surety for the young man before my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him to you, then I shall bear sin before my father all the days.’
33
And now, please let your servant remain instead of the young man as a servant to my adon, and let the young man go up with his brothers.
34
For how shall I go up to my father if the young man is not with me? Lest I see the evil that will find my father.”
