1
And Yosef came and told Pharaoh and said, “My father and my brothers, and their flocks and their herds and all that belongs to them, have come from the land of Kena’an; and see, they are in the land of Goshen.”
2
And from the end of his brothers he took five men and presented them before Pharaoh.
3
And Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” And they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds of flocks, both we and our fathers.”
4
And they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land, because there is no pasture for the flocks that belong to your servants, for the famine is severe in the land of Kena’an. And now, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”
5
And Pharaoh spoke to Yosef, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.
6
The land of Mitzrayim is before you. In the best of the land cause your father and your brothers to dwell. Let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know among them men of ability, then set them as overseers over the livestock that belongs to me.”
7
And Yosef brought Yaaqov his father and caused him to stand before Pharaoh. And Yaaqov blessed Pharaoh.
8
And Pharaoh said to Yaaqov, “How many are the days of the years of your life?”
9
And Yaaqov said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my sojournings are one hundred and thirty years. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojournings.”
10
And Yaaqov blessed Pharaoh and went out from before Pharaoh.
11
And Yosef settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Mitzrayim, in the best of the land, in the land of Raamses, according to the command of Pharaoh.
12
And Yosef sustained his father and his brothers and all the house of his father with bread, according to the mouth of the little ones.
13
And there was no bread in all the land, because the famine was exceedingly severe. And the land of Mitzrayim and the land of Kena’an languished because of the famine.
14
And Yosef gathered all the silver that was found in the land of Mitzrayim and in the land of Kena’an for the grain that they were buying. And Yosef brought the silver into the house of Pharaoh.
15
And when the silver was finished from the land of Mitzrayim and from the land of Kena’an, all the Mitzrim came to Yosef, saying, “Give us bread. Why should we die before you? For the silver is finished.”
16
And Yosef said, “Give your livestock, and I will give to you for your livestock, if the silver is finished.”
17
And they brought their livestock to Yosef. And Yosef gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the livestock of the flocks, and for the livestock of the herds, and for donkeys. And he sustained them with bread in exchange for all their livestock in that year.
18
And that year came to an end, and they came to him in the second year and said to him, “We will not hide from my adon that the silver is finished, and the livestock of the animals belong to my adon. Nothing remains before my adon except our bodies and our ground.
19
Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our ground? Acquire us and our ground for bread, and we and our ground will become servants to Pharaoh. And give seed, that we may live and not die, and that the ground not become desolate.”
20
And Yosef acquired all the ground of Mitzrayim for Pharaoh, for the Mitzrim sold each one his field, because the famine had become strong upon them. And the land became Pharaoh’s.
21
And as for the people, he transferred them to the cities, from one end of the border of Mitzrayim to its other end.
22
Only the ground of the kohenim he did not acquire, because a prescribed portion belonged to the kohenim from Pharaoh, and they ate the prescribed portion that Pharaoh gave them. Therefore they did not sell their ground.
23
And Yosef said to the people, “See, I have acquired you this day, and your ground, for Pharaoh. See, seed for you, and you shall sow the ground.
24
And it shall be at the harvests that you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four parts shall be yours, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for those who are in your houses, and for food for your little ones.”
25
And they said, “You have kept us alive. Let us find favor in the eyes of my adon, and we will be servants to Pharaoh.”
26
And Yosef set it as a statute over the ground of Mitzrayim to this day: a fifth belongs to Pharaoh. Only the ground of the kohenim alone did not become Pharaoh’s.
27
And Yisra’el dwelt in the land of Mitzrayim, in the land of Goshen. And they took possession within it, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.
28
And Yaaqov lived in the land of Mitzrayim seventeen years. And the days of Yaaqov, the years of his life, were one hundred and forty-seven years.
29
And the days of Yisra’el drew near to die. And he called to his son Yosef and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please place your hand beneath my thigh and deal with me in covenant-faithfulness and truth. Please do not bury me in Mitzrayim.
30
But I shall lie with my fathers, and you shall carry me out from Mitzrayim and bury me in their burial place.” And he said, “I will do according to your word.”
31
And he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. And Yisra’el bowed himself upon the head of the bed.
