1
And Yosef fell upon the face of his father, and wept over him, and kissed him.
2
And Yosef commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father. And the physicians embalmed Yisra’el.
3
And forty days were fulfilled for him, for thus are fulfilled the days of embalming. And the Mitzrim wept for him seventy days.
4
And when the days of weeping for him had passed, Yosef spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
5
‘My father made me swear, saying, “See, I am dying. In my grave that I dug for myself in the land of Kena’an, there you shall bury me.” And now, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will return.’”
6
And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, according to the oath he made you swear.”
7
And Yosef went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Mitzrayim,
8
and all the house of Yosef, and his brothers, and the house of his father. Only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds they left in the land of Goshen.
9
And both chariots and horsemen went up with him, and the camp was exceedingly great.
10
And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Yarden, and there they mourned with a great and exceedingly heavy mourning. And he made mourning for his father seven days.
11
And the inhabitants of the land, the Kena’ani, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, and they said, “This is a heavy mourning for Mitzrayim.” Therefore its name was called Avel-Mitzrayim, which is beyond the Yarden.
12
And his sons did for him according to what he had commanded them.
13
And his sons carried him to the land of Kena’an and buried him in the cave of the field of Makhpelah, which Avraham had acquired with the field as a possession for a burial place from Efron the Chitti, before Mamre.
14
And Yosef returned to Mitzrayim after burying his father, he and his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
15
And the brothers of Yosef saw that their father was dead, and they said, “Perhaps Yosef will bear hatred against us and returning, return upon us all the evil that we did to him.”
16
And they sent word to Yosef, saying, “Your father commanded before his death, saying,
17
‘Thus you shall say to Yosef: Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did evil to you.’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the Elohim of your father.” And Yosef wept when they spoke to him.
18
And his brothers also went and fell before his face and said, “See, we are your servants.”
19
And Yosef said to them, “Do not fear. For am I in the place of Elohim?
20
And you—you intended evil against me, but Elohim intended it for good, in order to do as it is this day: to keep many people alive.
21
And now, do not fear. I will sustain you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke to their heart.
22
And Yosef dwelt in Mitzrayim, he and the house of his father. And Yosef lived one hundred and ten years.
23
And Yosef saw the sons of Efrayim to the third generation. The sons also of Makhir son of Menasheh were born upon the knees of Yosef.
24
And Yosef said to his brothers, “I am dying. But visiting, Elohim will surely visit you, and bring you up from this land to the land that He swore to Avraham, to Yitzchaq, and to Yaaqov.”
25
And Yosef made the sons of Yisra’el swear, saying, “Visiting, Elohim will surely visit you, and you shall bring my bones up from here.”
26
And Yosef died, being one hundred and ten years old. And they embalmed him, and he was placed in a coffin in Mitzrayim.
