1
“And we turned and journeyed into the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Reeds, according to what Yahuah had spoken to me, and we went around Mount Seir many days.
2
And Yahuah spoke to me, saying,
3
‘You have gone around this mountain long enough. Turn yourselves northward.
4
And command the people, saying: You are about to pass through the border of your brothers, the sons of Esav, who dwell in Seir, and they will be afraid of you. Therefore guard yourselves exceedingly.
5
Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even as much as the tread of the sole of a foot, because I have given Mount Seir to Esav as a possession.
6
Food you shall buy from them with silver, that you may eat; and water you shall also purchase from them with silver, that you may drink.
7
For Yahuah your Elohim has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years Yahuah your Elohim has been with you; you have lacked nothing.’
8
And we passed by from our brothers, the sons of Esav, who dwell in Seir, away from the way of the Arabah, from Elat and from Etzyon-Gever. And we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moav.
9
And Yahuah said to me, ‘Do not harass Moav, and do not contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of his land as a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot as a possession.’
10
The Emim formerly dwelt in it, a people great and many and tall as the Anaqim.
11
They also were reckoned as Refaim, like the Anaqim, but the Moavim call them Emim.
12
And in Seir the Chorim formerly dwelt, but the sons of Esav dispossessed them and destroyed them from before their face and dwelt in their place, as Yisra’el did to the land of his possession that Yahuah gave to them.
13
‘Now rise and cross the wadi of Zered.’ And we crossed the wadi of Zered.
14
And the days that we walked from Qadesh-Barnea until we crossed the wadi of Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war was consumed from the midst of the camp, according to what Yahuah had sworn concerning them.
15
And indeed, the hand of Yahuah was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp until they were consumed.
16
And it came to pass, when all the men of war had finished dying from the midst of the people,
17
that Yahuah spoke to me, saying,
18
‘Today you are crossing the border of Moav at Ar.
19
And when you draw near opposite the sons of Ammon, do not harass them and do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot as a possession.’
20
It also was reckoned as a land of Refaim. Refaim formerly dwelt in it, but the Ammonim call them Zamzummim,
21
a people great and many and tall as the Anaqim. And Yahuah destroyed them from before their face, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their place,
22
as He did for the sons of Esav who dwell in Seir, when He destroyed the Chori from before their face, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their place even to this day.
23
And the Avvim who dwelt in the villages as far as Azzah—the Kaftorim, who came out from Kaftor, destroyed them and dwelt in their place.
24
‘Rise, journey, and cross the wadi of Arnon. See, I have given into your hand Sichon the Emori, king of Cheshbon, and his land. Begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
25
This day I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you upon the face of the peoples under all the heavens, who shall hear the report of you and tremble and writhe because of you.’
26
And I sent messengers from the wilderness of Qedemot to Sichon king of Cheshbon with words of peace, saying,
27
‘Let me pass through your land. By the road, by the road, I will go; I will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
28
Food you shall sell me for silver, that I may eat, and water you shall give me for silver, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on my feet,
29
as the sons of Esav who dwell in Seir and the Moavim who dwell in Ar did for me, until I cross the Yarden into the land that Yahuah our Elohim is giving to us.’
30
But Sichon king of Cheshbon was not willing to let us pass through him, for Yahuah your Elohim hardened his ruach and made his heart strong, in order to give him into your hand, as at this day.
31
And Yahuah said to me, ‘See, I have begun to give Sichon and his land before your face. Begin, possess, that you may possess his land.’
32
And Sichon came out to meet us, he and all his people, to battle at Yahatz.
33
And Yahuah our Elohim gave him before our face, and we struck him and his sons and all his people.
34
And we captured all his cities at that time, and devoted every city to destruction—men, and women, and little ones. We left no survivor.
35
Only the livestock we took as plunder for ourselves, with the spoil of the cities that we captured.
36
From Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi of Arnon, and the city that is in the wadi, even as far as Gilad, there was not a city too strong for us. Yahuah our Elohim gave all before our face.
37
Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near—to all the side of the wadi Yabboq, and the cities of the hill country, and wherever Yahuah our Elohim had commanded us not to go.”
