1
“Hear, Yisra’el: You are crossing the Yarden today to go in and possess nations greater and mightier than you, cities great and fortified to the heavens,
2
a people great and tall, the sons of the Anaqim, whom you know and of whom you have heard, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anaq?’
3
And you shall know today that Yahuah your Elohim is the One crossing before your face, a consuming fire. He will destroy them, and He will subdue them before your face; and you shall dispossess them and cause them to perish quickly, according to what Yahuah spoke to you.
4
Do not say in your heart, when Yahuah your Elohim drives them out from before your face, ‘Because of my righteousness Yahuah has brought me in to possess this land,’ for because of the wickedness of these nations Yahuah is dispossessing them from before your face.
5
Not because of your righteousness or because of the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations Yahuah your Elohim is dispossessing them from before your face, and in order to establish the word that Yahuah swore to your fathers, to Avraham, to Yitzchaq, and to Yaaqov.
6
And you shall know that not because of your righteousness is Yahuah your Elohim giving you this good land to possess it, for you are a stiff-necked people.
7
Remember; do not forget how you provoked Yahuah your Elohim in the wilderness. From the day that you came out from the land of Mitzrayim until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahuah.
8
And at Chorev you provoked Yahuah to wrath, and Yahuah became angry with you to destroy you.
9
When I went up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that Yahuah cut with you, I remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights; bread I did not eat, and water I did not drink.
10
And Yahuah gave to me the two tablets of stone written with the finger of Elohim, and upon them were all the words that Yahuah had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.
11
And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights that Yahuah gave to me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.
12
And Yahuah said to me, ‘Rise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you brought out from Mitzrayim have corrupted themselves. They have turned aside quickly from the way that I commanded them; they have made for themselves a cast image.’
13
And Yahuah spoke to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and see, it is a stiff-necked people.
14
Leave Me alone, that I may destroy them and wipe out their name from beneath the heavens, and I will make you into a nation mightier and more numerous than they.’
15
And I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.
16
And I saw, and see, you had sinned against Yahuah your Elohim. You had made for yourselves a cast calf; you had turned aside quickly from the way that Yahuah commanded you.
17
And I seized the two tablets and cast them from my two hands and shattered them before your eyes.
18
And I fell down before Yahuah as at the first, forty days and forty nights; bread I did not eat, and water I did not drink, because of all your sin that you had sinned, doing what was evil in the eyes of Yahuah to provoke Him to anger.
19
For I was afraid because of the anger and the wrath with which Yahuah was angry against you to destroy you. But Yahuah listened to me also at that time.
20
And against Aharon Yahuah was exceedingly angry, to destroy him; and I prayed also for Aharon at that time.
21
And your sin that you had made, the calf, I took and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was as fine as dust; and I cast its dust into the brook that descended from the mountain.
22
And at Taverah, and at Massah, and at Qivrot-Hattaavah, you provoked Yahuah to wrath.
23
And when Yahuah sent you from Qadesh-Barnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land that I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the mouth of Yahuah your Elohim, and you did not believe Him, nor listen to His voice.
24
Rebellious you have been against Yahuah from the day that I knew you.
25
And I fell down before Yahuah forty days and forty nights—I fell down because Yahuah had said He would destroy you.
26
And I prayed to Yahuah and said, ‘Adonai Yahuah, do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance whom You redeemed in Your greatness, whom You brought out from Mitzrayim with a strong hand.
27
Remember Your servants, Avraham, Yitzchaq, and Yaaqov. Do not turn toward the stubbornness of this people, or toward their wickedness, or toward their sin,
28
lest the land from which You brought us out say, “Because Yahuah was not able to bring them into the land that He spoke to them, and because He hated them, He brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.”
29
Yet they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm.’”
