1
And it came to be in the fourth year of Yehoyaqim son of Yoshiyahu, sovereign of Yehudah, that this Word came to Yirmeyahu from Yahuah, saying,
2
“Take for yourself a scroll of a book and write in it all the Words that I have spoken to you concerning Yisra’el, concerning Yehudah, and concerning all the nations, from the day I spoke to you— from the days of Yoshiyahu even to this day.
3
Perhaps the House of Yehudah shall hear all the evil I purpose to do to them, so that they return, each ish from his evil way, and I forgive their crookedness and their sin.”
4
Then Yirmeyahu called Barukh son of Neriyahu, and Barukh wrote from the mouth of Yirmeyahu all the Words of Yahuah that He had spoken to him upon a scroll of a book.
5
And Yirmeyahu commanded Barukh, saying, “I am restrained; I am unable to enter the House of Yahuah.
6
Therefore you shall enter and read from the scroll that you wrote from my mouth the Words of Yahuah in the ears of the people in the House of Yahuah on the day of fasting. And you shall also read them in the ears of all Yehudah coming from their cities.
7
Perhaps their supplication shall fall before the face of Yahuah, and they shall return, each ish from his evil way, for great is the anger and the fury that Yahuah has spoken against this people.”
8
And Barukh son of Neriyahu did according to all that Yirmeyahu the prophet commanded him, reading from the book the Words of Yahuah in the House of Yahuah.
9
And it came to be in the fifth year of Yehoyaqim son of Yoshiyahu, sovereign of Yehudah, in the ninth new moon, that all the people in Yerushalayim and all the people coming from the cities of Yehudah to Yerushalayim called a fast before the face of Yahuah.
10
Then Barukh read from the book the Words of Yirmeyahu in the House of Yahuah, in the chamber of Gemaryahu son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entrance of the New Gate of the House of Yahuah, in the ears of all the people.
11
And Mikhayahu son of Gemaryahu son of Shaphan heard all the Words of Yahuah from the book.
12
Then he descended to the house of the sovereign, to the chamber of the scribe. And see, all the rulers were sitting there: Elishama the scribe, Delayahu son of Shemayahu, Elnatan son of Akhbor, Gemaryahu son of Shaphan, Tzidqiyahu son of Chananyahu, and all the rulers.
13
And Mikhayahu declared to them all the Words he had heard when Barukh read from the book in the ears of the people.
14
Then all the rulers sent to Barukh Yehudi son of Netanyahu son of Shelemyahu son of Kushi, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll from which you read in the ears of the people, and come.” So Barukh son of Neriyahu took the scroll in his hand and came to them.
15
And they said to him, “Sit now and read it in our ears.” And Barukh read it in their ears.
16
And it came to be when they heard all the Words, they feared, each ish toward his companion, and said to Barukh, “Declaring, we shall declare all these Words to the sovereign.”
17
And they asked Barukh, saying, “Declare to us now: How did you write all these Words from his mouth?”
18
And Barukh said to them, “From his mouth he called all these Words to me, and I wrote them with ink upon the book.”
19
Then the rulers said to Barukh, “Go, hide yourself, you and Yirmeyahu, and let no ish know where you are.”
20
And they entered to the sovereign, into the court, but deposited the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And they declared all the Words in the ears of the sovereign.
21
Then the sovereign sent Yehudi to take the scroll. And he took it from the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Yehudi read it in the ears of the sovereign and in the ears of all the rulers standing beside the sovereign.
22
And the sovereign was sitting in the winter house in the ninth new moon, with the fire in the brazier burning before his face.
23
And it came to be when Yehudi had read three or four columns, he cut it with the scribe’s knife and cast it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.
24
And they did not fear or tear their garments— the sovereign and all his servants who heard all these Words.
25
And though Elnatan, Delayahu, and Gemaryahu entreated the sovereign not to burn the scroll, he did not hear them.
26
And the sovereign commanded Yerachme’el son of the sovereign, Serayahu son of Azri’el, and Shelemyahu son of Avde’el to seize Barukh the scribe and Yirmeyahu the prophet. But Yahuah hid them.
27
And the Word of Yahuah came to Yirmeyahu after the sovereign had burned the scroll and the Words Barukh had written from the mouth of Yirmeyahu, saying,
28
“Take again another scroll and write upon it all the former Words that were upon the first scroll that Yehoyaqim sovereign of Yehudah burned.
29
And concerning Yehoyaqim sovereign of Yehudah you shall say, ‘Thus says Yahuah: You burned this scroll, saying, “Why did you write upon it, saying, ‘Coming, the sovereign of Bavel shall come and destroy this land, and cause Adam and beast to cease from it’?”
30
Therefore thus says Yahuah concerning Yehoyaqim sovereign of Yehudah: He shall have no one sitting upon the throne of Daviyd, and his corpse shall be cast out to the heat by day and to the frost by night.
31
And I shall visit him, his seed, and his servants for their crookedness. I shall bring upon them, upon the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, and upon the ish of Yehudah all the evil that I spoke against them, but they did not hear.’”
32
Then Yirmeyahu took another scroll and gave it to Barukh son of Neriyahu, the scribe, and he wrote upon it from the mouth of Yirmeyahu all the Words of the book that Yehoyaqim sovereign of Yehudah had burned in the fire. And many other Words like them were added to them.
