1
And Sovereign Tzidqiyahu son of Yoshiyahu reigned in place of Konyahu son of Yehoyaqim, whom Nevukhadretztzar sovereign of Bavel caused to reign in the land of Yehudah.
2
But he, his servants, and the people of the land did not hear the Words of Yahuah that He spoke by the hand of Yirmeyahu the prophet.
3
And Sovereign Tzidqiyahu sent Yehukhal son of Shelemyahu and Tzephanyahu son of Maaseyahu, the Kohen, to Yirmeyahu the prophet, saying, “Please pray to Yahuah our Elohim for us.”
4
And Yirmeyahu was entering and going out in the midst of the people, for they had not yet placed him in the house of confinement.
5
And the army of Pharaoh had come out from Mitzrayim. When the Kasdim besieging Yerushalayim heard their report, they ascended away from Yerushalayim.
6
And the Word of Yahuah came to Yirmeyahu the prophet, saying,
7
“Thus says Yahuah, Elohim of Yisra’el: Thus you shall say to the sovereign of Yehudah who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: ‘See, the army of Pharaoh that came out to help you shall return to Mitzrayim, to its own land.
8
And the Kasdim shall return and fight against this city, capture it, and burn it with fire.’
9
Thus says Yahuah: ‘Do not deceive your own beings, saying, “Going, the Kasdim shall go away from us,” for they shall not go away.
10
For though you had struck all the army of the Kasdim fighting against you, and only pierced men remained among them, each ish would rise in his tent and burn this city with fire.’”
11
And it came to be when the army of the Kasdim had ascended away from Yerushalayim before the face of the army of Pharaoh,
12
that Yirmeyahu went out from Yerushalayim to go into the land of Binyamin, to divide a portion there in the midst of the people.
13
And he was at the Gate of Binyamin, and there was a master of the watch there whose name was Yiriyah son of Shelemyahu son of Chananyahu. And he seized Yirmeyahu the prophet, saying, “You are falling away to the Kasdim!”
14
And Yirmeyahu said, “Falsehood! I am not falling away to the Kasdim.” But he did not hear him. And Yiriyah seized Yirmeyahu and brought him to the rulers.
15
And the rulers were furious with Yirmeyahu, struck him, and placed him in the house of confinement— the house of Yehonatan the scribe— for they had made it into the house of imprisonment.
16
And Yirmeyahu entered the house of the pit and into the cells, and Yirmeyahu remained there many days.
17
Then Sovereign Tzidqiyahu sent and took him. And the sovereign asked him secretly in his house, saying, “Is there a Word from Yahuah?” And Yirmeyahu said, “There is.” And he said, “Into the hand of the sovereign of Bavel you shall be given.”
18
And Yirmeyahu said to Sovereign Tzidqiyahu, “What have I sinned against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you placed me in the house of confinement?
19
And where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The sovereign of Bavel shall not come against you or against this land’?
20
And now, hear, please, my master the sovereign. Let my supplication fall before your face, and do not return me to the house of Yehonatan the scribe, lest I die there.”
21
Then Sovereign Tzidqiyahu commanded, and they committed Yirmeyahu to the courtyard of the guard. And a loaf of bread was given to him daily from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the city was consumed. And Yirmeyahu remained in the courtyard of the guard.
