1
And he also said to the talmidim: “There was a certain rich ish who had a steward. And this steward was accused before him of wasting his possessions.
2
And calling him, he said to him: ‘What is this I hear concerning you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you are no longer able to remain steward.’
3
And the steward said within himself: ‘What shall I do, because my master is taking the stewardship away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.
4
I know what I shall do, so that when I am removed from the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’
5
And calling each one of his master’s debtors, he said to the first: ‘How much do you owe my master?’
6
And he said: ‘One hundred measures of oil.’ And he said to him: ‘Take your account, sit down quickly, and write fifty.’
7
Then he said to another: ‘And you— how much do you owe?’ And he said: ‘One hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him: ‘Take your account and write eighty.’
8
And the master praised the unrighteous steward because he had acted shrewdly. For the sons of this age are more shrewd toward their own generation than the sons of light.
9
And I tell you: make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they may receive you into everlasting dwellings.
10
Whoever is faithful in very little is faithful also in much. And whoever is unrighteous in very little is unrighteous also in much.
11
Therefore if you have not been faithful with unrighteous wealth, who shall entrust to you the true riches?
12
And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who shall give you what is your own?
13
No servant is able to serve two masters. For either he shall hate the one and love the other, or he shall hold firmly to the one and despise the other. You are not able to serve Elohim and wealth.”
14
And the Perushim, who loved silver, heard all these things and mocked him.
15
And he said to them: “You are those who declare yourselves righteous before Adam, but Elohim knows your hearts. For what is exalted among Adam is an abomination before Elohim.
16
The Torah and the prophets were until Yochanan. From then, the Kingdom of Elohim is being proclaimed, and everyone presses toward it.
17
But it is easier for the heavens and the earth to pass away than for one stroke of the Torah to fall.
18
Everyone who releases his ishah and marries another commits adultery. And whoever marries an ishah released from her husband commits adultery.
19
Now there was a certain rich ish who clothed himself in purple and fine linen and feasted splendidly every day.
20
And a certain poor ish named Elazar was laid at his gate, covered with sores,
21
and longing to be satisfied with what fell from the rich ish’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22
And it happened that the poor ish died and was carried by the messengers to the side of Avraham. And the rich ish also died and was buried.
23
And in Sheol, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Avraham from far away and Elazar at his side.
24
And he cried out and said: ‘Father Avraham, have compassion on me. Send Elazar, so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am suffering in this flame.’
25
But Avraham said: ‘Child, remember that in your life you received your good things, and Elazar likewise evil things. But now he is comforted here, and you are suffering.
26
And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those desiring to cross from here to you are not able, nor may anyone cross from there to us.’
27
And he said: ‘Then I petition you, father, send him to the house of my father,
28
for I have five brothers, so that he may testify to them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’
29
But Avraham said: ‘They have Mosheh and the prophets. Let them hear them.’
30
And he said: ‘No, father Avraham. But if someone from the dead goes to them, they shall turn back.’
31
And he said to him: ‘If they do not hear Mosheh and the prophets, neither shall they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’”
