Ovadyah was remembered as coming from the region of Shekhem and from a field called Beit-Hakkerem. The tradition identifies him as a taught one of Eliyahu.

It further identifies him with the captain of fifty who approached Eliyahu with humility and was spared. After leaving royal service, he was remembered as taking up the prophetic calling. At death he was buried with his fathers.
