1
Then I became deeply grieved, and I wept. And in anguish I prayed, saying:
2
“Righteous are You, Yahuah, and all Your works are righteous, and all Your ways are mercy and truth. You judge the world in truth and Righteousness.
3
And now remember me and look upon me. Do not punish me according to my sins, nor according to my errors, nor according to the errors of my fathers, who sinned before You.
4
For they disobeyed Your commandments, and You gave us over to plunder, to captivity, and to death, and made us a proverb, a byword, and a reproach among all the nations among whom You scattered us.
5
And now Your many Judgments are true in dealing with me according to my sins and according to those of my fathers, because we did not keep Your commandments and did not walk in truth before You.
6
And now, deal with me according to what is good in Your sight. Command my ruach to be taken from me, that I may be released and become dust. For it is better for me to die than to live, because I have heard false reproaches and there is great sorrow within me. Command that I now be released from this distress and go to the everlasting place. Do not turn Your face away from me.”
7
On that same day it happened that Sarah, daughter of Re’u’el, in Ecbatana of Media, was also reproached by one of her father’s maidservants.
8
For she had been given to seven husbands, and Asmodaios, the evil ruach, had killed them before they had gone in to her as husbands. And the maidservant said to her: “You are the one who kills your husbands! See, you have already had seven, and from not one of them have you borne the name of a wife.
9
Why do you beat us because your husbands died? Go with them! May we never see a son or daughter from you.”
10
When Sarah heard these things, she was deeply grieved, and she wept. And she went up into the upper chamber of her father’s house and intended to hang herself. But she thought: “I am the only daughter of my father. If I do this, it will bring reproach upon him, and I will bring down his old age with sorrow to Sheol.”
11
Then she stretched out her hands toward the window and prayed, saying: “Blessed are You, merciful Elohim, and blessed is Your Name forever and ever. Let all Your works bless You forever.
12
And now I lift up my face and my eyes toward You.
13
Command that I be released from the earth, that I may hear reproach no more.
14
You know, Master, that I am clean from every defilement with an ish,
15
and that I have not defiled my name nor the name of my father in the land of our captivity. I am my father’s only daughter, and he has no other child who might inherit him, nor any close kinsman, nor any son of a kinsman for whom I should preserve myself as ishah. Seven husbands of mine have already died. Why then should I live? But if it does not please You to take my being, command that mercy be shown to me, and that I no longer hear reproach.”
16
And at that very time, the prayer of both of them was heard before the Glory of El Elyon.
17
And Rafa’el was sent to heal them both: to remove the white films from the eyes of Toviyt, so that he might see the light of Elohim with his eyes, and to give Sarah, daughter of Re’u’el, as ishah to Toviyah son of Toviyt, and to bind Asmodaios, the evil ruach, because Sarah had been appointed for Toviyah according to the right of kinship. At that same time Toviyt returned from the courtyard into his house, and Sarah daughter of Re’u’el came down from her upper chamber.
