1
And these are the words of the sefer that Baruk son of Neriyah, son of Machseyah, son of Tzidqiyah, son of Chasadyah, son of Chilqiyah, wrote in Bavel,
2
in the fifth year, on the seventh day of the month, at the time when the Kasdim took Yerushalayim and burned it with fire.
3
And Baruk read the words of this sefer in the hearing of Yekhonyah son of Yehoyaqim, king of Yehudah, and in the hearing of all the people who came to hear the sefer,
4
and in the hearing of the mighty ones, and the sons of the kings, and the elders, and all the people, from the least to the greatest, all who dwelt in Bavel beside the river Sud.
5
And they wept, and fasted, and prayed before Yahuah.
6
And they gathered silver, each according to what his hand was able to give,
7
and sent it to Yerushalayim to Yehoyaqim son of Chilqiyah, son of Shalom, the kohen, and to the other kohenim, and to all the people who were found with him in Yerushalayim,
8
at the time when he received the vessels of the House of Yahuah that had been carried away from the Temple, in order to return them to the land of Yehudah, on the tenth day of Sivan— vessels of silver that Tzidqiyahu son of Yoshiyahu, king of Yehudah, had made,
9
after Nevukhadnetzar king of Bavel had carried away Yekhonyah, and the rulers, and the captives, and the mighty ones, and the people of the land from Yerushalayim and brought them to Bavel.
10
And they said: “See, we have sent you silver. Buy with the silver ascending offerings, and sin offerings, and incense. Prepare grain offerings, and cause them to go up upon the altar of Yahuah our Elohim.
11
And pray for the life of Nevukhadnetzar king of Bavel and for the life of Belshatzar his son, that their days upon the earth may be like the days of the heavens.
12
And Yahuah will give us strength and enlighten our eyes, and we shall live beneath the shadow of Nevukhadnetzar king of Bavel and beneath the shadow of Belshatzar his son. And we shall serve them many days and find favor before them.
13
And pray also for us to Yahuah our Elohim, because we have sinned against Yahuah our Elohim, and until this day the wrath of Yahuah and His anger have not turned away from us.
14
And you shall read this sefer that we have sent to you, to make confession in the House of Yahuah on the day of the feast and on the appointed days.
15
And you shall say: ‘To Yahuah our Elohim belongs Righteousness, but to us shame of face, as it is this day— to the ish of Yehudah, to the inhabitants of Yerushalayim,
16
to our kings, to our rulers, to our kohenim, to our prophets, and to our fathers,
17
because we sinned before Yahuah.
18
We disobeyed Him and did not hear the voice of Yahuah our Elohim, to walk according to the commandments of Yahuah that He set before our face.
19
From the day Yahuah brought our fathers out of the land of Mitzrayim until this day, we have been disobedient toward Yahuah our Elohim, and we have been negligent in refusing to hear His voice.
20
Therefore the evils clung to us, and the curse that Yahuah commanded through Mosheh His servant on the day He brought our fathers out of the land of Mitzrayim, to give us a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day.
21
Yet we did not hear the voice of Yahuah our Elohim, according to all the words of the prophets whom He sent to us.
22
But each ish walked according to the imagination of his crooked heart, serving other elohim and doing what is evil before the eyes of Yahuah our Elohim.’”
