Eusebius turns from theology to chronology. Using Roman and Yehudi rulers, he places the birth of Yahushua in the reign of Augustus, after the long expansion of Roman power had brought much of the inhabited world under a single imperial order. He sees symbolic meaning in this political unification: the proclamation that later crossed provincial boundaries arose when war among many kingdoms had been partially restrained by one empire. He connects the period with prophetic expectations concerning the removal of earlier rulers and the coming of a universal dominion. The chapter is not a neutral chronology; Eusebius reads imperial circumstances providentially. Yet his historical markers are concrete: Augustus, the registration associated with Quirinius in the Gospel tradition, the rule of Herod, and the end of older native political succession in Yehudah become fixed coordinates for the appearance of Yahushua within Roman history.
