Eusebius places the Mattithyahu account of Herod's killing of children around Beit-Lechem beside Yosephus's much fuller portrayal of Herod's violent final years. Yosephus does not narrate the Bethlehem episode, but Eusebius argues that the king's known conduct makes the Gospel report consistent with his character. He summarizes executions within Herod's own household, including sons and other relatives, political purges, suspicion, and the king's worsening illness. He recounts the grotesque symptoms and the despair surrounding Herod's death, along with the plan to gather prominent Yehudim into confinement so they could be killed when he died, ensuring public mourning. That order was not ultimately carried out. Eusebius interprets Herod's bodily collapse as judgment and treats the killing of the infants as the opening bloodshed directed against Yahushua. The chapter deliberately binds Gospel memory to Yosephus's political history rather than leaving the infancy account isolated from the wider Herodian record.
