Eusebius preserves the tradition that Marqos, a hearer and interpreter of Kepha, wrote down the proclamation associated with Kepha for believers in Rome who wanted a durable record. Kepha, upon learning what had been done, is said neither to have aggressively prevented nor personally commissioned the writing in the forms Eusebius cites; later tradition portrays him as approving its use. Eusebius connects the account with Clement of Alexandria and Papias. The chapter is a major witness to early reception history of the Besorah of Marqos: its authority is explained through proximity to Kepha rather than through Marqos being one of the Twelve.
