Drawing on Yosephus, Eusebius recounts a deadly crowd disaster during Pesach under the governor Cumanus. A Roman soldier makes an obscene provocation toward the crowds near the sanctuary. The people demand punishment; the governor initially reacts militarily, and panic spreads through the densely packed festival population. Many are crushed or trampled in the attempt to escape. Eusebius again interprets the event within his theology of judgment, while the underlying report shows how tense Roman military supervision of pilgrimage festivals could become catastrophic.
