Book IV moves through Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus, and Marcus Aurelius, including the Bar Kokhba war, early apologists, Polykarpos, Justin, Hegesippus, Melito, Tatian, and Bardaisan. The chapter records coercion under Roman or local authority: arrest, interrogation, confiscation, exile, torture, execution, or public pressure. Eusebius praises endurance but also records those who yielded, fled, or were later restored. The material overlaps the Smyrnaean martyrdom tradition: Polykarpos is remembered as an elderly overseer connected with earlier witnesses, questioned by the Roman proconsul, and killed after refusing the required public renunciation. In this reconstruction the chapter coordinate is preserved as Book 4, Chapter 15, and the full subject is retained under the heading 'Polykarpos and Others Martyred at Smyrna'. Names, dates, quoted-source relationships, and political or textual function are kept distinct from Eusebius's own interpretive claims.
