1
And Yahuah spoke to Mosheh, saying,
2
“Send for yourself men, and let them search out the land of Kena’an, which I am giving to the sons of Yisra’el. One ish from each tribe of his fathers you shall send, every one a ruler among them.”
3
And Mosheh sent them from the wilderness of Paran by the mouth of Yahuah, all of them men, heads of the sons of Yisra’el.
4
And these were their names: From the tribe of Reuven, Shammua son of Zakkur.
5
From the tribe of Shimon, Shafat son of Chori.
6
From the tribe of Yehudah, Kalev son of Yefunneh.
7
From the tribe of Yissakhar, Yigal son of Yosef.
8
From the tribe of Efrayim, Hoshea son of Nun.
9
From the tribe of Binyamin, Palti son of Rafu.
10
From the tribe of Zevulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi.
11
From the tribe of Yosef, from the tribe of Menasheh, Gaddi son of Susi.
12
From the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli.
13
From the tribe of Asher, Setur son of Mikhael.
14
From the tribe of Naftali, Nachbi son of Vofsi.
15
From the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Makhi.
16
These are the names of the men whom Mosheh sent to search out the land. And Mosheh called Hoshea son of Nun, Yehoshua.
17
And Mosheh sent them to search out the land of Kena’an and said to them, “Go up this way into the Negev, and go up into the hill country,
18
and see what the land is, and the people who dwell in it—whether they are strong or weak, whether few or many;
19
and what the land is in which they dwell—whether good or bad; and what the cities are in which they dwell—whether in camps or in fortifications;
20
and what the land is—whether rich or lean, whether there are trees in it or not. And strengthen yourselves, and take from the fruit of the land.” Now the days were the days of the first ripe grapes.
21
And they went up and searched out the land from the wilderness of Tzin to Rechov, toward the entrance of Chamat.
22
And they went up through the Negev and came to Chevron, and there were Achiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, descendants of the Anaq. Now Chevron had been built seven years before Tzoan in Mitzrayim.
23
And they came to the wadi of Eshkol, and from there they cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes, and two carried it on a pole, with pomegranates and figs.
24
That place was called the wadi of Eshkol because of the cluster that the sons of Yisra’el cut down from there.
25
And they returned from searching out the land at the end of forty days.
26
And they went and came to Mosheh and to Aharon and to all the congregation of the sons of Yisra’el, to the wilderness of Paran, to Qadesh. And they returned word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
27
And they recounted to him and said, “We came into the land to which you sent us, and indeed it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
28
Nevertheless, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and exceedingly great. And we also saw the descendants of Anaq there.
29
Amaleq dwells in the land of the Negev, and the Chitti, and the Yevusi, and the Emori dwell in the hill country, and the Kena’ani dwell by the sea and along the side of the Yarden.”
30
And Kalev silenced the people before Mosheh and said, “Going up, we shall surely go up and possess it, for overcoming, we are surely able to overcome it.”
31
But the men who went up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.”
32
And they brought out an evil report of the land that they had searched out to the sons of Yisra’el, saying, “The land through which we passed to search it out is a land that consumes its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in its midst are men of great stature.
33
And there we saw the Nefilim—the sons of Anaq, from the Nefilim—and we were in our own eyes like grasshoppers, and so we were in their eyes.”
