1
And the two messengers came to Sedom in the evening, and Lot was sitting at the gate of Sedom. And Lot saw them, and rose to meet them, and bowed himself with his face toward the ground.
2
And he said, “See now, my adonim, please turn aside into the house of your servant, and spend the night, and wash your feet. Then you may rise early and go on your way.” And they said, “No, for we will spend the night in the open square.”
3
And he pressed them greatly, and they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made a feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
4
Before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sedom, surrounded the house, from young to old, all the people from every quarter.
5
And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.”
6
And Lot went out to them at the entrance, and shut the door behind him.
7
And he said, “Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly.
8
See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man. Please, let me bring them out to you, and do to them according to what is good in your eyes. Only do nothing to these men, because they have come beneath the shelter of my roof.”
9
And they said, “Stand back.” And they said, “This one came to sojourn, and now he judges continually. Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” And they pressed hard against the man, against Lot, and drew near to break the door.
10
But the men stretched out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
11
And they struck the men who were at the entrance of the house with blindness, from small to great, so that they exhausted themselves trying to find the entrance.
12
And the men said to Lot, “Who else belongs to you here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whoever you have in the city—bring them out from this place.
13
For we are bringing ruin upon this place, because their outcry has become great before Yahuah, and Yahuah has sent us to bring ruin upon it.”
14
And Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, those who were to take his daughters, and said, “Rise, go out from this place, because Yahuah is bringing ruin upon the city.” But he was like one making sport in the eyes of his sons-in-law.
15
And when the dawn arose, the messengers pressed Lot, saying, “Rise, take your ishah and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the iniquity of the city.”
16
And he lingered. And the men seized his hand, and the hand of his ishah, and the hands of his two daughters, because of the compassion of Yahuah upon him. And they brought him out and set him outside the city.
17
And it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that one said, “Escape for your life. Do not look behind you, and do not stop anywhere in the plain. Escape toward the mountain, lest you be swept away.”
18
And Lot said to them, “Please, no, Adonai.
19
See now, Your servant has found favor in Your eyes, and You have magnified Your compassion that You have shown me in keeping my life alive. But I am not able to escape toward the mountain, lest the calamity overtake me and I die.
20
See now, this city is near enough to flee there, and it is small. Please, let me escape there—is it not small?—and my life shall remain alive.”
21
And he said to him, “See, I have lifted your face concerning this thing also, that I will not overturn the city of which you have spoken.
22
Hurry, escape there, because I am not able to do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Tzoar.
23
The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Tzoar.
24
And Yahuah caused sulfur and fire to rain upon Sedom and Amorah from Yahuah, from the heavens.
25
And He overturned those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew from the ground.
26
And his ishah looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
27
And Avraham rose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before Yahuah.
28
And he looked toward Sedom and Amorah, and toward all the land of the plain, and saw—and see: the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.
29
And it came to pass, when Elohim brought ruin upon the cities of the plain, that Elohim remembered Avraham and sent Lot out from the midst of the overthrow, when He overturned the cities in which Lot had dwelt.
30
And Lot went up from Tzoar and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him, because he was afraid to dwell in Tzoar. And he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
31
And the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to come in to us according to the way of all the earth.
32
Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him, so that we may preserve seed from our father.”
33
And they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she rose.
34
And it came to pass on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, “See, I lay last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, so that we may preserve seed from our father.”
35
And they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she rose.
36
And the two daughters of Lot conceived by their father.
37
And the firstborn brought forth a son and called his name Moav. He is the father of Moav to this day.
38
And the younger also brought forth a son and called his name Ben-Ammi. He is the father of the sons of Ammon to this day.
