1
And the life of Sarah was one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah.
2
And Sarah died in Qiryat-Arba, which is Chevron, in the land of Kena’an. And Avraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
3
And Avraham rose from before his dead and spoke to the sons of Chet, saying,
4
“I am a sojourner and a resident among you. Give me a possession for a burial place among you, so that I may bury my dead from before me.”
5
And the sons of Chet answered Avraham, saying to him,
6
“Hear us, my adon. You are a prince of Elohim among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will withhold his burial place from you, that you may bury your dead.”
7
And Avraham rose and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the sons of Chet.
8
And he spoke with them, saying, “If it is within your will that I bury my dead from before me, hear me, and intercede for me with Efron son of Tzochar,
9
that he may give me the cave of Makhpelah, which is his, which is at the end of his field. For the full weight of silver let him give it to me among you as a possession for a burial place.”
10
And Efron was sitting among the sons of Chet. And Efron the Chitti answered Avraham in the hearing of the sons of Chet, before all who entered the gate of his city, saying,
11
“No, my adon, hear me. I give you the field, and the cave that is in it I give to you. Before the eyes of the sons of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.”
12
And Avraham bowed himself before the people of the land.
13
And he spoke to Efron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, “If only you would hear me. I will give the silver for the field. Take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.”
14
And Efron answered Avraham, saying to him,
15
“My adon, hear me. A land worth four hundred sheqels of silver—what is that between me and you? Bury your dead.”
16
And Avraham listened to Efron, and Avraham weighed to Efron the silver that he had spoken in the hearing of the sons of Chet: four hundred sheqels of silver, passing according to the merchant.
17
And the field of Efron that was in Makhpelah, which was before Mamre—the field and the cave that was in it, and every tree that was in the field, within all its border around—
18
was established to Avraham as a possession before the eyes of the sons of Chet, before all who entered the gate of his city.
19
And after this, Avraham buried Sarah his ishah in the cave of the field of Makhpelah, before Mamre, which is Chevron, in the land of Kena’an.
20
And the field and the cave that was in it were established to Avraham as a possession for a burial place from the sons of Chet.
