1
And Rachel saw that she had not brought forth children to Yaaqov, and Rachel envied her sister. And she said to Yaaqov, “Give me children, and if not, I die.”
2
And the anger of Yaaqov burned against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of Elohim, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”
3
And she said, “See, my maidservant Bilhah. Go in to her, and she shall bring forth upon my knees, and I also shall be built through her.”
4
And she gave him Bilhah her maidservant as an ishah, and Yaaqov went in to her.
5
And Bilhah conceived and brought forth a son to Yaaqov.
6
And Rachel said, “Elohim has judged me, and has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Therefore she called his name Dan.
7
And Bilhah, maidservant of Rachel, conceived again and brought forth a second son to Yaaqov.
8
And Rachel said, “With wrestlings of Elohim I have wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed.” And she called his name Naftali.
9
And Leah saw that she had ceased bringing forth, and she took Zilpah her maidservant and gave her to Yaaqov as an ishah.
10
And Zilpah, maidservant of Leah, brought forth a son to Yaaqov.
11
And Leah said, “Fortune has come.” And she called his name Gad.
12
And Zilpah, maidservant of Leah, brought forth a second son to Yaaqov.
13
And Leah said, “In my happiness, for daughters shall call me blessed.” And she called his name Asher.
14
And Reuven went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to Leah his mother. And Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me from the mandrakes of your son.”
15
And she said to her, “Is it a small thing that you have taken my ish? And would you also take the mandrakes of my son?” And Rachel said, “Therefore he shall lie with you tonight in exchange for the mandrakes of your son.”
16
And Yaaqov came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come in to me, because hiring, I have hired you with the mandrakes of my son.” And he lay with her that night.
17
And Elohim listened to Leah, and she conceived and brought forth a fifth son to Yaaqov.
18
And Leah said, “Elohim has given me my wages because I gave my maidservant to my ish.” And she called his name Yissakhar.
19
And Leah conceived again and brought forth a sixth son to Yaaqov.
20
And Leah said, “Elohim has endowed me with a good endowment. This time my ish will honor me, because I have brought forth six sons to him.” And she called his name Zevulun.
21
And afterward she brought forth a daughter and called her name Dinah.
22
And Elohim remembered Rachel, and Elohim listened to her and opened her womb.
23
And she conceived and brought forth a son, and said, “Elohim has gathered away my reproach.”
24
And she called his name Yosef, saying, “May Yahuah add to me another son.”
25
And it came to pass, when Rachel had brought forth Yosef, that Yaaqov said to Lavan, “Send me away, that I may go to my place and to my land.
26
Give me my women and my children, for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service with which I have served you.”
27
And Lavan said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, remain. I have learned by signs that Yahuah has blessed me because of you.”
28
And he said, “Name your wages to me, and I will give them.”
29
And he said to him, “You know how I have served you and what your livestock became with me.
30
For the little that you had before me has spread into abundance, and Yahuah has blessed you at my foot. And now, when shall I also provide for my own house?”
31
And he said, “What shall I give you?” And Yaaqov said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will return and feed your flock and guard it.
32
I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there every speckled and spotted sheep, and every dark one among the lambs, and every spotted and speckled one among the goats. And these shall be my wages.
33
And my righteousness shall answer for me in the day to come, when you come concerning my wages before you: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and dark among the lambs, if found with me, shall be counted stolen.”
34
And Lavan said, “See, let it be according to your word.”
35
And on that day he removed the male goats that were striped and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one in which there was white, and every dark one among the lambs, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36
And he set a journey of three days between himself and Yaaqov; and Yaaqov fed the rest of the flock of Lavan.
37
And Yaaqov took for himself fresh rods of poplar, almond, and plane tree, and peeled white strips in them, exposing the white that was in the rods.
38
And he set the rods that he had peeled before the flocks, in the troughs, in the watering channels where the flocks came to drink; and they conceived when they came to drink.
39
And the flocks conceived before the rods, and the flocks brought forth striped, speckled, and spotted.
40
And Yaaqov separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the striped and all the dark among the flock of Lavan. And he set his own herds by themselves and did not place them with the flock of Lavan.
41
And it came to pass whenever the stronger of the flock conceived, that Yaaqov placed the rods before the eyes of the flock in the troughs, so that they might conceive among the rods.
42
But when the flock was weak, he did not place them there. So the weak became Lavan’s, and the strong became Yaaqov’s.
43
And the ish increased exceedingly, and had many flocks, female servants and male servants, camels and donkeys.
