1
And it happened on one of those days, while he was teaching the people in the House and proclaiming the Besorah, the chief kohenim and the scribes came upon him with the elders,
2
and spoke, saying to him: “Tell us— by what authority are you doing these things? Or who is the one who gave you this authority?”
3
And answering, he said to them: “I also shall ask you a word. Tell me:
4
the immersion of Yochanan— was it from the heavens or from Adam?”
5
And they reasoned among themselves, saying: “If we say: ‘From the heavens,’ he shall say: ‘Why then did you not trust him?’
6
But if we say: ‘From Adam,’ all the people shall stone us, for they are persuaded that Yochanan was a prophet.”
7
And they answered that they did not know from where it was.
8
And Yahushua said to them: “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
9
And he began to speak to the people this parable: “A certain ish planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and traveled away for a long time.
10
And at the appointed time he sent a servant to the tenant farmers so that they might give him from the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenant farmers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
11
And he continued and sent another servant. But they beat that one also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.
12
And he continued and sent a third. And wounding this one also, they cast him out.
13
Then the master of the vineyard said: ‘What shall I do? I shall send my beloved son. Perhaps they shall respect this one.’
14
But when the tenant farmers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying: ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the Inheritance may become ours.’
15
And they cast him outside the vineyard and killed him. What then shall the master of the vineyard do to them?
16
He shall come and destroy those tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others.” And when they heard, they said: “May it never be.”
17
But looking directly at them, he said: “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected— this became the chief cornerstone’?
18
Everyone who falls upon that stone shall be broken. But upon whomever it falls, it shall crush him.”
19
And the scribes and the chief kohenim sought to lay hands upon him in that very hour, but they feared the people, for they knew that he had spoken this parable against them.
20
And watching him closely, they sent spies who pretended themselves to be righteous, so that they might seize upon his word and hand him over to the rule and authority of the governor.
21
And they questioned him, saying: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and do not receive the face of Adam, but teach the way of Elohim in truth.
22
Is it permitted for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?”
23
But perceiving their craftiness, he said to them:
24
“Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” And they said: “Caesar’s.”
25
And he said to them: “Then return to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to Elohim what belongs to Elohim.”
26
And they were not able to seize upon his word before the people. And marveling at his answer, they became silent.
27
And some of the Tzadduqim came near— those who say there is no resurrection— and questioned him,
28
saying: “Teacher, Mosheh wrote for us that if someone’s brother dies having an ishah and he dies without children, his brother shall take the ishah and raise up seed for his brother.
29
Therefore there were seven brothers. And the first took an ishah and died without children.
30
And the second—
31
and the third— took her. And likewise the seven left no children and died.
32
And afterward the ishah also died.
33
Therefore, in the resurrection, whose ishah shall she be? For the seven had her as ishah.”
34
And Yahushua said to them: “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.
35
But those who are considered worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
36
For they are no longer able to die, for they are like the messengers and are sons of Elohim, being sons of the resurrection.
37
But that the dead are raised, even Mosheh showed at the bush, when he calls Yahuah the Elohim of Avraham, and the Elohim of Yitzchaq, and the Elohim of Yaaqov.
38
Now He is not Elohim of the dead, but of the living, for all live to Him.”
39
And some of the scribes answered: “Teacher, you have spoken well.”
40
For they no longer dared to question him about anything.
41
And he said to them: “How do they say that the Anointed is the son of Daviyd?
42
For Daviyd himself says in the sefer of Tehilliym: ‘Yahuah said to my Master: Sit at My right hand
43
until I place your enemies as a footstool beneath your feet.’
44
Therefore Daviyd calls him Master. How then is he his son?”
45
And while all the people were listening, he said to his talmidim:
46
“Guard yourselves from the scribes who desire to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues, and places of honor at feasts,
47
who consume the houses of widows and for appearance make long prayers. These shall receive greater Judgment.”
