1
Monastic life is a voluntary discipline of renunciation, prayer, work, restraint, and obedience under a received rule.
2
One entering shall not use monastic profession to defraud heirs, spouse, children, creditors, or persons whose property is already in his custody.
3
Private wealth shall be disposed of lawfully before or according to the rule of the community. Property given to the monastery becomes subject to communal stewardship rather than the abbot's private ownership.
4
The abbot or abbess shall govern by rule, not whim. Administrators shall account for goods, lands, food, and gifts.
5
Monks and nuns shall not wander for commerce or scandal under the name of piety. Hospitality, labor, prayer, fasting, and care for the weak shall be ordered without cruelty.
6
Discipline may correct disobedience, theft, violence, sexual misconduct, and deliberate disruption, but punishment shall not become private vengeance.
