1
And Atalyah mother of Achazyahu saw that her son was dead, and she rose and destroyed all the Seed of the Kingdom.
2
But Yehosheva daughter of King Yehoram, sister of Achazyahu, took Yoash son of Achazyahu and stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being put to death, him and his nurse, into the bedchamber. And they hid him from before Atalyah, and he was not put to death.
3
And he was with her, hidden in the House of Yahuah, six years. And Atalyah reigned over the land.
4
And in the seventh year Yehoyada sent and took the commanders of hundreds of the Kari and of the runners, and brought them to himself into the House of Yahuah. And he cut a Covenant with them and caused them to swear in the House of Yahuah, and showed them the son of the king.
5
And he commanded them, saying: “This is the matter that you shall do: One third of you who enter on the Shabbat shall be guards of the house of the king;
6
and one third shall be at the Gate of Sur; and one third at the gate behind the runners. And you shall guard the House, keeping watch.
7
And the two divisions of you, all who go out on the Shabbat, shall guard the House of Yahuah around the king.
8
And you shall surround the king all around, each ish with his weapons in his hand. And whoever comes within the ranks shall be put to death. And be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.”
9
And the commanders of hundreds did according to all that Yehoyada the kohen commanded. And each ish took his men, those entering on the Shabbat and those going out on the Shabbat, and they came to Yehoyada the kohen.
10
And the kohen gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and the shields that had belonged to King Daviyd, which were in the House of Yahuah.
11
And the runners stood, each ish with his weapons in his hand, from the right side of the House to the left side of the House, beside the altar and beside the House, around the king all around.
12
And he brought out the son of the king and placed upon him the crown and the Testimony. And they made him king and anointed him. And they struck their palms and said: “Let the king live!”
13
And Atalyah heard the voice of the runners and the people, and she came to the people at the House of Yahuah.
14
And she looked, and see, the king was standing beside the pillar, according to the judgment, and the commanders and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing the trumpets. And Atalyah tore her garments and cried: “Conspiracy! Conspiracy!”
15
And Yehoyada the kohen commanded the commanders of hundreds, those appointed over the host, and said to them: “Bring her out from within the ranks. And whoever goes after her, put him to death with the sword.” For the kohen had said: “Let her not be put to death in the House of Yahuah.”
16
And they placed hands upon her, and she went by the way of the entrance of the horses to the house of the king. And she was put to death there.
17
And Yehoyada cut the Covenant between Yahuah and the king and the people, that they should be the People of Yahuah; and also between the king and the people.
18
And all the people of the land came to the House of Baal and tore it down. His altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly, and Mattan the kohen of Baal they put to death before the altars. And the kohen appointed officers over the House of Yahuah.
19
And he took the commanders of hundreds, and the Kari, and the runners, and all the people of the land. And they brought the king down from the House of Yahuah and came by the way of the Gate of the Runners to the house of the king. And he sat upon the Throne of the kings.
20
And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet. And Atalyah they had put to death with the sword at the house of the king.
21
Yoash was seven years old when he began to reign.
