1
The words of Agur son of Yaqeh, the burden. The ish declares to Ithiy’el— to Ithiy’el and Ukhal:
2
Surely I am more brutish than any ish, and I do not possess the understanding of Adam.
3
I have not learned wisdom, nor do I know the knowledge of the Holy One.
4
Who has ascended into the heavens and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His Name, and what is the name of His son, if you know?
5
Every Word of Eloah is refined. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.
6
Do not add to His words, lest He correct you and you be found a liar.
7
Two things I ask of You. Do not withhold them from me before I die:
8
Remove falsehood and the word of deception far from me. Give me neither poverty nor wealth. Feed me with the bread appointed for me,
9
lest I become satisfied and deny You and say, “Who is Yahuah?” Or lest I become poor and steal, and seize falsely the Name of my Elohim.
10
Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you and you bear guilt.
11
There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother.
12
There is a generation pure in its own eyes, yet it has not been washed from its filth.
13
There is a generation— how exalted are its eyes, and its eyelids are lifted high.
14
There is a generation whose teeth are swords and whose jaw-teeth are knives, to devour the poor from the earth and the needy from among Adam.
15
The leech has two daughters: “Give! Give!” Three things are never satisfied, four never say, “Enough”:
16
Sheol, the barren womb, the earth not satisfied with water, and fire, which never says, “Enough.”
17
The eye that mocks a father and despises obedience to a mother— the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the sons of the eagle shall eat it.
18
Three things are too wonderful for me, and four I do not understand:
19
the way of the eagle in the heavens, the way of a serpent upon a rock, the way of a ship in the heart of the sea, and the way of an ish with a maiden.
20
Thus is the way of an adulterous ishah: she eats, wipes her mouth, and says, “I have done no crookedness.”
21
Under three things the earth trembles, and under four it cannot bear:
22
a servant when he reigns, a fool when he is filled with bread,
23
a hated ishah when she is married, and a maidservant when she inherits her mistress.
24
Four things are small upon the earth, yet they are exceedingly wise:
25
the ants are a people without strength, yet they prepare their bread in summer;
26
the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their house in the rock;
27
the locusts have no king, yet all of them go out in ordered ranks;
28
the lizard you may grasp with the hands, yet it is in the palaces of kings.
29
Three things are stately in their step, and four are stately in going:
30
the lion, mighty among beasts, which does not turn back before anything;
31
one girded at the loins, the he-goat, and a king against whom there is no rising.
32
If you have acted foolishly in lifting yourself up, or if you have devised evil, put your hand upon your mouth.
33
For pressing milk brings forth curds, and pressing the nose brings forth blood, and pressing anger brings forth contention.
