1
Pursue love, and earnestly desire spiritual matters, but especially that you may prophesy.
2
For the one speaking in a tongue does not speak to Adam, but to Elohim, for no one understands, but by ruach he speaks mysteries.
3
But the one prophesying speaks to Adam for building, encouragement, and consolation.
4
The one speaking in a tongue builds himself, but the one prophesying builds the assembly.
5
Now I desire all of you to speak in tongues, but even more that you prophesy. And the one prophesying is greater than the one speaking in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the assembly may receive building.
6
But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what shall I benefit you unless I speak to you either in revelation, or knowledge, or prophecy, or teaching?
7
Even lifeless things giving sound, whether flute or harp, if they do not give distinct sounds, how shall it be known what is played?
8
For if a shofar gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare for battle?
9
So also you, unless through the tongue you give speech that is clear, how shall what is spoken be known? For you shall be speaking into air.
10
There are, perhaps, many kinds of voices in the world, and none without meaning.
11
Therefore if I do not know the meaning of the voice, I shall be a foreigner to the one speaking, and the one speaking a foreigner to me.
12
So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual things, seek to abound for the building of the assembly.
13
Therefore the one speaking in a tongue must pray that he may interpret.
14
For if I pray in a tongue, my ruach prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
15
What then? I shall pray with ruach, but I shall also pray with the mind. I shall sing praise with ruach, but I shall also sing praise with the mind.
16
Otherwise, if you bless with ruach, how shall the one occupying the place of the unlearned say: “Amein” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
17
For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not built.
18
I give thanks to Elohim that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
19
But in an assembly I desire to speak five words with my mind, so that I may also instruct others, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20
Brothers, do not become children in understanding. But in evil, be infants, and in understanding be mature.
21
In the Torah it is written: “By people of other tongues and by lips of foreigners I shall speak to this people, and even so they shall not hear Me, says Yahuah.”
22
Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who trust, but to unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for those who trust.
23
Therefore if the whole assembly comes together in one place and all speak in tongues, and unlearned people or unbelievers enter, shall they not say that you are mad?
24
But if all prophesy and an unbeliever or unlearned person enters, he is exposed by all, he is examined by all.
25
The hidden things of his heart become manifest, and so, falling upon his face, he shall bow before Elohim, declaring: “Elohim is truly among you.”
26
What then, brothers? Whenever you come together, each has a psalm, a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, an interpretation. Let all things be done for building.
27
If anyone speaks in a tongue, let it be by two, or at most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.
28
But if there is no interpreter, let him remain silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to Elohim.
29
And let two or three prophets speak, and let the others discern.
30
But if something is revealed to another sitting by, let the first be silent.
31
For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be encouraged.
32
And the ruachot of prophets are subject to prophets,
33
for Elohim is not of disorder but of shalom, as in all the assemblies of the set-apart ones.
34
Let the women be silent in the assemblies, for they are not permitted to speak there in disruptive judgment, but are to be ordered, just as the Torah also says.
35
And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for an ishah to speak in that manner in the assembly.
36
Or did the Word of Elohim go out from you? Or did it reach only you?
37
If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things I write to you are a command of the Master.
38
But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.
39
Therefore, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
40
But let all things be done properly and in order.
