Bel veHaTannin 1
And King Astyages was gathered to his fathers, and Koresh the Paras received his Kingdom.
Bel veHaTannin 2
And Dani’el lived with the king and was honored above all his companions.
Bel veHaTannin 3
And there was among the Bavlim a mighty one whose name was Bel. And there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour, and forty sheep, and six vessels of wine.
Bel veHaTannin 4
And the king worshiped him and went every day to bow himself before him. But Dani’el worshiped his own Elohim. And the king said to him: “Why do you not worship Bel?”
Bel veHaTannin 5
And he said: “Because I do not worship mighty ones made with hands, but the living Elohim, who created the heavens and the earth and has dominion over all flesh.”
Bel veHaTannin 6
Then the king said to him: “Do you not think that Bel is a living mighty one? Do you not see how much he eats and drinks every day?”
Bel veHaTannin 7
And Dani’el laughed and said: “Do not be deceived, O king. For this one is clay within and bronze without, and he has never eaten or drunk anything.”
Bel veHaTannin 8
Then the king became angry and called the kohenim of Bel and said to them: “If you do not tell me who consumes these provisions, you shall die.
Bel veHaTannin 9
But if you show that Bel consumes them, then Dani’el shall die, because he has spoken blasphemy against Bel.” And Dani’el said to the king: “Let it be according to your word.”
Bel veHaTannin 10
And the kohenim of Bel were seventy, besides their women and children. And the king went with Dani’el into the house of Bel.
Bel veHaTannin 11
And the kohenim of Bel said: “See, we are going outside. But you, O king, set the food, and mix the wine, and shut the doors, and seal them with your signet.
Bel veHaTannin 12
And when you come in the morning, if you do not find that Bel has consumed all, we shall die. Or else Dani’el, who speaks falsely against us.”
Bel veHaTannin 13
And they were confident, because beneath the table they had made a hidden entrance through which they continually entered and consumed the provisions.
Bel veHaTannin 14
And it came to pass, when they had gone out, that the king set the food before Bel. But Dani’el commanded his servants to bring ashes. And they scattered them throughout the whole house in the presence of the king alone. Then they went out, shut the doors, sealed them with the king’s signet, and departed.
Bel veHaTannin 15
And in the night the kohenim came, according to their custom, with their women and children, and they ate and drank everything.
Bel veHaTannin 16
And the king arose early in the morning, and Dani’el with him.
Bel veHaTannin 17
And the king said: “Dani’el, are the seals whole?” And he said: “They are whole, O king.”
Bel veHaTannin 18
And as soon as the doors were opened, the king looked upon the table and cried out with a great voice: “You are great, O Bel, and there is no deceit with you.”
Bel veHaTannin 19
Then Dani’el laughed and restrained the king from entering. And he said: “Look now at the floor and consider whose footprints these are.”
Bel veHaTannin 20
And the king said: “I see the footprints of men, and women, and children.”
Bel veHaTannin 21
Then the king became enraged, and he seized the kohenim, and their women, and their children. And they showed him the hidden doors through which they entered and consumed what was upon the table.
Bel veHaTannin 22
And the king put them to death and delivered Bel into the hand of Dani’el. And Dani’el destroyed him and his house.
Bel veHaTannin 23
And there was a great tannin in that place, which the Bavlim worshiped.
Bel veHaTannin 24
And the king said to Dani’el: “Will you say concerning this also that it is bronze? See, it lives, and it eats and drinks. You cannot say that it is not a living mighty one. Therefore worship it.”
Bel veHaTannin 25
And Dani’el said: “I shall worship Yahuah my Elohim, for He is the living Elohim.
Bel veHaTannin 26
But give me permission, O king, and I shall kill this tannin without sword or staff.” And the king said: “I give you permission.”
Bel veHaTannin 27
Then Dani’el took pitch, fat, and hair, and boiled them together. And he made cakes from them and put them into the mouth of the tannin. And the tannin ate them and burst open. And Dani’el said: “See what you worship.”
Bel veHaTannin 28
And when the Bavlim heard this, they became exceedingly angry and conspired against the king. And they said: “The king has become a Yehudi. He has destroyed Bel, and killed the tannin, and slaughtered the kohenim.”
Bel veHaTannin 29
And they came to the king and said: “Deliver Dani’el to us, or we shall kill you and your house.”
Bel veHaTannin 30
And when the king saw that they pressed him violently, he was compelled and delivered Dani’el to them.
Bel veHaTannin 31
And they cast him into the den of lions. And he was there six days.
Bel veHaTannin 32
And in the den were seven lions, and two bodies and two sheep were given to them every day. But at that time nothing was given to them, so that they might devour Dani’el.
Bel veHaTannin 33
Now Chavaqquq the prophet was in Yehudah. And he had prepared a stew and had broken bread into a bowl, and was going into the field to carry it to the reapers.
Bel veHaTannin 34
And a messenger of Yahuah said to Chavaqquq: “Carry the meal which you have to Bavel, to Dani’el, in the den of lions.”
Bel veHaTannin 35
And Chavaqquq said: “My master, I have never seen Bavel, and I do not know the den.”
Bel veHaTannin 36
Then the messenger of Yahuah took hold of the crown of his head, and lifted him by the hair of his head, and by the force of the ruach set him down in Bavel above the den.
Bel veHaTannin 37
And Chavaqquq cried out, saying: “Dani’el, Dani’el, take the meal which Elohim has sent you.”
Bel veHaTannin 38
And Dani’el said: “You have remembered me, O Elohim, and You have not forsaken those who love You.”
Bel veHaTannin 39
And Dani’el arose and ate. And the messenger of Elohim immediately returned Chavaqquq to his own place.
Bel veHaTannin 40
And on the seventh day the king came to mourn for Dani’el. And he came to the den and looked in, and see— Dani’el was sitting there.
Bel veHaTannin 41
Then the king cried out with a great voice: “Great are You, Yahuah Elohim of Dani’el, and there is no other besides You.”
Bel veHaTannin 42
And he drew him out. But those who had sought his destruction he cast into the den. And they were devoured immediately before his face.
