1
There was an ish in the land of Utz whose name was Iyov. That ish was complete and upright, fearing Elohim and turning away from evil.
2
Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.
3
His livestock were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred female donkeys; and his household was exceedingly great. Thus this ish was greater than all the sons of the east.
4
His sons would go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his appointed day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5
And when the days of feasting had completed their circuit, Iyov would send and set them apart. He rose early in the morning and offered ascending offerings according to the number of them all, for Iyov said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed Elohim in their hearts.” Thus Iyov did continually.
6
And the day came when the sons of Elohim entered to station themselves before Yahuah, and the Accuser also entered among them.
7
And Yahuah said to the Accuser, “From where do you come?” The Accuser answered Yahuah and said, “From roaming through the earth and walking about in it.”
8
Then Yahuah said to the Accuser, “Have you set your heart upon My servant Iyov? For there is none like him upon the earth— an ish complete and upright, fearing Elohim and turning away from evil.”
9
And the Accuser answered Yahuah and said, “Does Iyov fear Elohim for nothing?
10
Have You not enclosed him, his house, and all that belongs to him on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock have spread throughout the land.
11
But now, send forth Your hand and strike all that belongs to him. Surely he shall curse You to Your face.”
12
Then Yahuah said to the Accuser, “See, all that belongs to him is in your hand; only do not send forth your hand against him.” And the Accuser went out from before the face of Yahuah.
13
And the day came when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their firstborn brother.
14
And a messenger came to Iyov and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the female donkeys were feeding beside them,
15
when Sheva fell upon them and took them. They struck the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone escaped to declare it to you.”
16
While this one was still speaking, another came and said, “The fire of Elohim fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone escaped to declare it to you.”
17
While this one was still speaking, another came and said, “The Kasdim formed three divisions, rushed upon the camels, and took them. They struck the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone escaped to declare it to you.”
18
While this one was still speaking, another came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their firstborn brother,
19
when, see, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house. It fell upon the young ones, and they died; and I alone escaped to declare it to you.”
20
Then Iyov rose, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the earth and bowed himself,
21
and said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. Yahuah gave, and Yahuah has taken; blessed be the Name of Yahuah.”
22
In all this Iyov did not sin and did not assign disorder to Elohim.
