1
And it came to pass, when all the nation had completely crossed the Yarden, that Yahuah spoke to Yehoshua, saying,
2
“Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one ish from each tribe,
3
and command them, saying, ‘Lift up for yourselves from here, from the midst of the Yarden, from the place where the feet of the kohenim stood firm, twelve stones. And carry them over with you and set them down in the lodging place where you lodge tonight.’”
4
And Yehoshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Yisra’el, one ish from each tribe.
5
And Yehoshua said to them, “Cross over before the ark of Yahuah your Elohim into the midst of the Yarden, and each ish lift up one stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Yisra’el,
6
so that this may be a sign in your midst. When your sons ask tomorrow, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’
7
then you shall say to them, ‘Because the waters of the Yarden were cut off from before the ark of the covenant of Yahuah. When it crossed the Yarden, the waters of the Yarden were cut off.’ And these stones shall be for a remembrance to the sons of Yisra’el forever.”
8
And the sons of Yisra’el did according to what Yehoshua commanded, and lifted up twelve stones from the midst of the Yarden, according to what Yahuah had spoken to Yehoshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Yisra’el. And they carried them over with them to the lodging place and set them down there.
9
And Yehoshua raised up twelve stones in the midst of the Yarden, in the place where the feet of the kohenim carrying the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.
10
And the kohenim carrying the ark stood in the midst of the Yarden until everything was completed that Yahuah had commanded Yehoshua to speak to the people, according to all that Mosheh had commanded Yehoshua. And the people hurried and crossed over.
11
And it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over, that the ark of Yahuah crossed over, and the kohenim, before the face of the people.
12
And the sons of Reuven, and the sons of Gad, and half the tribe of Menasheh crossed over armed before the face of the sons of Yisra’el, according to what Mosheh had spoken to them.
13
About forty thousand armed for the host crossed over before Yahuah for battle, to the plains of Yericho.
14
On that day Yahuah made Yehoshua great in the eyes of all Yisra’el, and they feared him as they had feared Mosheh, all the days of his life.
15
And Yahuah spoke to Yehoshua, saying,
16
“Command the kohenim carrying the ark of the Testimony that they come up from the Yarden.”
17
And Yehoshua commanded the kohenim, saying, “Come up from the Yarden.”
18
And it came to pass, when the kohenim carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahuah came up from the midst of the Yarden, and the soles of the feet of the kohenim were lifted onto the dry ground, that the waters of the Yarden returned to their place and went over all its banks as before.
19
And the people came up from the Yarden on the tenth day of the first month and encamped at Gilgal, at the eastern edge of Yericho.
20
And those twelve stones that they had taken from the Yarden, Yehoshua raised up at Gilgal.
21
And he spoke to the sons of Yisra’el, saying, “When your sons ask their fathers tomorrow, saying, ‘What are these stones?’
22
then you shall make your sons know, saying, ‘On dry ground Yisra’el crossed this Yarden.’
23
For Yahuah your Elohim dried up the waters of the Yarden from before your face until you had crossed over, as Yahuah your Elohim did to the Sea of Reeds, which He dried up from before our face until we had crossed over,
24
so that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Yahuah, that it is strong, and so that you may fear Yahuah your Elohim all the days.”
