1
And it came to pass, when Adoni-Tzedeq king of Yerushalayim heard that Yehoshua had captured Ai and devoted it to destruction, as he had done to Yericho and to its king, so he had done to Ai and to its king, and that the inhabitants of Givon had made peace with Yisra’el and were in their midst,
2
that they feared exceedingly, because Givon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
3
And Adoni-Tzedeq king of Yerushalayim sent to Hoham king of Chevron, and to Piram king of Yarmut, and to Yafia king of Lakhish, and to Devir king of Eglon, saying,
4
“Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Givon, because it has made peace with Yehoshua and with the sons of Yisra’el.”
5
And the five kings of the Emori gathered themselves together and went up—the king of Yerushalayim, the king of Chevron, the king of Yarmut, the king of Lakhish, and the king of Eglon—they and all their hosts. And they encamped against Givon and fought against it.
6
And the men of Givon sent to Yehoshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, “Do not withdraw your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Emori who dwell in the hill country have gathered themselves against us.”
7
And Yehoshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty sons of strength.
8
And Yahuah said to Yehoshua, “Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hand. Not an ish among them shall stand before your face.”
9
And Yehoshua came upon them suddenly, having gone up from Gilgal all night.
10
And Yahuah threw them into confusion before Yisra’el, and he struck them with a great slaughter at Givon, and pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beit-Choron, and struck them as far as Azeqah and as far as Maqqedah.
11
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Yisra’el and were on the descent of Beit-Choron, that Yahuah cast great stones from the heavens upon them as far as Azeqah, and they died. More died from the stones of hail than the sons of Yisra’el killed with the sword.
12
Then Yehoshua spoke to Yahuah on the day Yahuah gave the Emori before the sons of Yisra’el, and he said before the eyes of Yisra’el: “Sun, stand still over Givon, and moon, over the valley of Ayalon.”
13
And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation had taken vengeance upon its enemies. Is this not written in the sefer of Yashar? And the sun stood in the midst of the heavens and did not hurry to go down for about a whole day.
14
And there was no day like that before it or after it, when Yahuah listened to the voice of an ish, for Yahuah fought for Yisra’el.
15
And Yehoshua returned, and all Yisra’el with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
16
And these five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Maqqedah.
17
And it was declared to Yehoshua, saying, “The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Maqqedah.”
18
And Yehoshua said, “Roll great stones to the mouth of the cave and appoint men over it to guard them.
19
But you, do not stand still. Pursue after your enemies and strike their rear. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for Yahuah your Elohim has given them into your hand.”
20
And it came to pass, when Yehoshua and the sons of Yisra’el had finished striking them with an exceedingly great slaughter until they were consumed, and the survivors who remained from them had entered the fortified cities,
21
that all the people returned to Yehoshua at the camp at Maqqedah in peace. No ish sharpened his tongue against any of the sons of Yisra’el.
22
And Yehoshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring out to me these five kings from the cave.”
23
And they did so and brought out to him those five kings from the cave: the king of Yerushalayim, the king of Chevron, the king of Yarmut, the king of Lakhish, and the king of Eglon.
24
And it came to pass, when they brought out these kings to Yehoshua, that Yehoshua called all the men of Yisra’el and said to the commanders of the men of war who had gone with him, “Draw near. Place your feet upon the necks of these kings.” And they drew near and placed their feet upon their necks.
25
And Yehoshua said to them, “Do not fear and do not be shattered. Be strong and firm, for thus Yahuah will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.”
26
And afterward Yehoshua struck them and put them to death and hanged them upon five trees. And they remained hanging upon the trees until evening.
27
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun that Yehoshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and cast them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and placed great stones over the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.
28
And Yehoshua captured Maqqedah on that day and struck it with the mouth of the sword, and its king he devoted to destruction, them and every being who was in it. He left no survivor. And he did to the king of Maqqedah as he had done to the king of Yericho.
29
And Yehoshua passed from Maqqedah, and all Yisra’el with him, to Livnah and fought against Livnah.
30
And Yahuah gave it also, and its king, into the hand of Yisra’el. And he struck it with the mouth of the sword, and every being who was in it. He left no survivor in it, and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Yericho.
31
And Yehoshua passed from Livnah, and all Yisra’el with him, to Lakhish, and encamped against it and fought against it.
32
And Yahuah gave Lakhish into the hand of Yisra’el, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the mouth of the sword, and every being who was in it, according to all that he had done to Livnah.
33
Then Horam king of Gezer went up to help Lakhish, and Yehoshua struck him and his people until he left him no survivor.
34
And Yehoshua passed from Lakhish, and all Yisra’el with him, to Eglon, and they encamped against it and fought against it.
35
And they captured it on that day and struck it with the mouth of the sword, and every being who was in it he devoted to destruction on that day, according to all that he had done to Lakhish.
36
And Yehoshua went up from Eglon, and all Yisra’el with him, to Chevron, and they fought against it.
37
And they captured it and struck it with the mouth of the sword, and its king, and all its cities, and every being who was in it. He left no survivor, according to all that he had done to Eglon. And he devoted it to destruction, and every being who was in it.
38
And Yehoshua turned, and all Yisra’el with him, to Devir and fought against it.
39
And he captured it, and its king, and all its cities, and they struck them with the mouth of the sword and devoted to destruction every being who was in it. He left no survivor. As he had done to Chevron, so he did to Devir and to its king, and as he had done to Livnah and to its king.
40
And Yehoshua struck all the land: the hill country, and the Negev, and the Shefelah, and the slopes, and all their kings. He left no survivor, but devoted to destruction everything that breathed, according to what Yahuah, Elohim of Yisra’el, had commanded.
41
And Yehoshua struck them from Qadesh-Barnea even to Azzah, and all the land of Goshen even to Givon.
42
And all these kings and their land Yehoshua captured at one time, because Yahuah, Elohim of Yisra’el, fought for Yisra’el.
43
And Yehoshua returned, and all Yisra’el with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
