1:1
In the twelfth year of the reign of Nevukhadnetzar, who reigned over the Ashshurim in Nineveh, the great city, Arphaxad reigned over the Madayim in Ecbatana.
1:2
And he built around Ecbatana walls of hewn stones, each stone three cubits wide and six cubits long. He made the height of the wall seventy cubits and its breadth fifty cubits.
1:3
And at its gates he raised towers one hundred cubits high, and their foundations were sixty cubits wide.
1:4
And he made its gates— gates seventy cubits high and forty cubits wide— so that the armies of his mighty ones might go forth, and his infantry might march in ordered ranks.
1:5
In those days King Nevukhadnetzar made war against King Arphaxad in the great plain, which is the plain in the territory of Ragau.
1:6
And all who dwelt in the hill country and all who dwelt along the Perath, and the Chiddeqel, and the Hydaspes, and upon the plain of Arioch, king of the Elymaim, joined themselves to him. And many nations assembled themselves for the battle of the sons of Cheleoud.
1:7
Then Nevukhadnetzar, king of the Ashshurim, sent to all who dwelt in Paras, and to all who dwelt toward the west, to those who dwelt in Kilikia, and Dammeseq, and Levanon, and Anti-Levanon, and to all who dwelt along the face of the sea,
1:8
and to those among the nations of Karmel, and Gil’ad, and the upper Galil, and the great plain of Yizre’el,
1:9
and to all who were in Shomron and its cities, and beyond the Yarden as far as Yerushalayim, and Beit-Anot, and Chelous, and Qadesh, and the river of Mitsrayim, and Tachpanhes, and Raamses, and all the land of Goshen,
1:10
even beyond Tanis and Memphis, and to all who dwelt in Mitsrayim as far as the borders of Kush.
1:11
But all the inhabitants of the whole land made light of the word of Nevukhadnetzar, king of the Ashshurim, and did not go with him to battle. For they did not fear him. Rather, he was before them as one ish, and they sent away his messengers empty-handed and in disgrace.
1:12
Then Nevukhadnetzar became exceedingly angry with all that land. And he swore by his throne and his kingdom that he would surely take vengeance upon all the territories of Kilikia, and Dammeseq, and Aram, and that he would destroy with his sword all the inhabitants of the land of Moav, and the sons of Ammon, and all Yehudah, and everyone in Mitsrayim as far as the borders of the two seas.
1:13
Then in the seventeenth year he set his army in battle array against King Arphaxad and prevailed in his battle. And he overturned all the army of Arphaxad, and all his horsemen, and all his chariots.
1:14
And he became master of his cities, and came as far as Ecbatana. He seized its towers, plundered its streets, and turned its beauty into reproach.
1:15
And he captured Arphaxad in the mountains of Ragau, struck him through with his spears, and utterly destroyed him to that day.
1:16
Then he returned to Nineveh, he and all his mixed multitude of warriors, an exceedingly great company of men of war. And there he rested and feasted, he and his army, for one hundred and twenty days.
