1
In the beginning of the reign of Yehoyaqim son of Yoshiyahu, sovereign of Yehudah, this Word came from Yahuah, saying,
2
“Thus says Yahuah: Stand in the court of the House of Yahuah and speak to all the cities of Yehudah who come to bow themselves in the House of Yahuah all the Words I command you to speak to them. Do not diminish a Word.
3
Perhaps they shall hear and return, each ish from his evil way, and I shall relent concerning the evil I purpose to do to them because of the evil of their deeds.
4
And you shall say to them, ‘Thus says Yahuah: If you do not hear Me, to walk in My Torah that I set before your faces,
5
to hear the Words of My servants the prophets whom I send to you, rising early and sending— though you have not heard—
6
then I shall make this House like Shiloh, and this city I shall give as a curse to all the nations of the earth.’”
7
And the Kohenim, the prophets, and all the people heard Yirmeyahu speaking these Words in the House of Yahuah.
8
And it came to be when Yirmeyahu completed speaking all that Yahuah commanded him to speak to all the people, that the Kohenim, the prophets, and all the people seized him, saying, “Dying, you shall die!
9
Why have you prophesied in the Name of Yahuah, saying, ‘This House shall become like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered against Yirmeyahu in the House of Yahuah.
10
And the rulers of Yehudah heard these Words and ascended from the house of the sovereign to the House of Yahuah. And they sat at the entrance of the New Gate of Yahuah.
11
Then the Kohenim and the prophets spoke to the rulers and to all the people, saying, “A Judgment of death belongs to this ish, for he prophesied against this city, as you heard with your ears.”
12
And Yirmeyahu spoke to all the rulers and to all the people, saying, “Yahuah sent me to prophesy against this House and against this city all the Words that you heard.
13
And now, make your ways and your deeds good, and hear the voice of Yahuah your Elohim; and Yahuah shall relent concerning the evil that He spoke against you.
14
And as for me, see, I am in your hand. Do to me as is good and upright in your eyes.
15
Only knowing, know: if you put me to death, you shall place innocent blood upon yourselves, upon this city, and upon its inhabitants. For in truth Yahuah sent me to you to speak all these Words in your ears.”
16
Then the rulers and all the people said to the Kohenim and to the prophets, “No Judgment of death belongs to this ish, for he spoke to us in the Name of Yahuah our Elohim.”
17
And men from the elders of the land rose and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying,
18
“Mikhah of Moreshet prophesied in the days of Chizqiyahu sovereign of Yehudah, and spoke to all the people of Yehudah, saying, ‘Thus says Yahuah of Hosts: Tziyon shall be plowed like a field; Yerushalayim shall become heaps; and the mountain of the House like the high places of a forest.’
19
Did Chizqiyahu sovereign of Yehudah and all Yehudah put him to death? Did he not fear Yahuah and entreat the face of Yahuah, so that Yahuah relented concerning the evil He had spoken against them? But we are doing great evil against our own beings.”
20
And there was also an ish prophesying in the Name of Yahuah— Uriyahu son of Shemayahu from Qiryat-Yearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the Words of Yirmeyahu.
21
And Sovereign Yehoyaqim, all his mighty ones, and all the rulers heard his words; and the sovereign sought to put him to death. But Uriyahu heard and feared, and fled and entered Mitzrayim.
22
Then Sovereign Yehoyaqim sent men to Mitzrayim: Elnatan son of Akhbor, and men with him, to Mitzrayim.
23
And they brought Uriyahu out from Mitzrayim and brought him to Sovereign Yehoyaqim. And he struck him with the sword and cast his corpse into the graves of the sons of the people.
24
But the hand of Achiqam son of Shaphan was with Yirmeyahu, so as not to give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
