Yechezqel was remembered as a kohanic man from the district called Sarira. He died in the land of the Kasdim during the exile after rebuking idolatry among the exiles. The memorial places him in the ancestral tomb-field associated with Shem and Arpakhshad.

Yechezqel gave the people a sign connected with the river Kevar: failing waters signaled desolation, while overflowing waters signaled return toward Yerushalayim. Another story says that when a hostile force came upon an assembled crowd, the waters ceased so the people could cross and then returned against the pursuers.

He was also remembered as providing fish during need, giving hope to those near death, showing the exiles what was happening in Yerushalayim, and strengthening them through the vision of the dry bones. The tradition further connects him with the pattern of the future House and with rebuke of the tribes that persecuted Torah-keepers.
