1
And there was one ish from Ramatayim-Tzofim, from the hill country of Efrayim, and his name was Elqanah son of Yerocham, son of Elihu, son of Tochu, son of Tzuf, an Efrati.
2
And he had two wives. The name of the one was Channah, and the name of the second Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Channah had no children.
3
And this ish went up from his city from days to days to bow himself and to sacrifice to Yahuah of Hosts at Shiloh. And there the two sons of Eli, Chofni and Pinechas, were kohenim to Yahuah.
4
And it came to pass on the day when Elqanah sacrificed that he gave portions to Peninnah his ishah and to all her sons and her daughters.
5
But to Channah he gave one portion of honor, for he loved Channah, though Yahuah had closed her womb.
6
And her rival also provoked her with provocation, to cause her to tremble, because Yahuah had closed her womb.
7
And thus he did year by year. As often as she went up to the house of Yahuah, so she provoked her. And she wept and would not eat.
8
And Elqanah her ish said to her, “Channah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart broken? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
9
And Channah rose after they had eaten in Shiloh and after they had drunk. And Eli the kohen was sitting upon the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of Yahuah.
10
And she was bitter of being, and prayed to Yahuah and wept greatly.
11
And she vowed a vow and said, “Yahuah of Hosts, if seeing, You will surely see the affliction of Your female servant and remember me, and not forget Your female servant, but give to Your female servant seed of men, then I will give him to Yahuah all the days of his life, and no razor shall go up upon his head.”
12
And it came to pass, as she multiplied praying before Yahuah, that Eli watched her mouth.
13
And Channah, she was speaking upon her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. And Eli considered her drunk.
14
And Eli said to her, “How long will you make yourself drunk? Remove your wine from upon you.”
15
And Channah answered and said, “No, my master. I am an ishah heavy of spirit. Wine and strong drink I have not drunk, but I have poured out my being before Yahuah.
16
Do not give your female servant as a daughter of worthlessness, for from the greatness of my complaint and my grief I have spoken until now.”
17
And Eli answered and said, “Go in shalom, and may the Elohim of Yisra’el give your request that you have asked from Him.”
18
And she said, “May your female servant find favor in your eyes.” And the ishah went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer as before.
19
And they rose early in the morning and bowed themselves before Yahuah, and returned and came to their house at HaRamah. And Elqanah knew Channah his ishah, and Yahuah remembered her.
20
And it came to pass at the turning of the days that Channah conceived and bore a son. And she called his name Shemu’el, saying, “For from Yahuah I asked him.”
21
And the ish Elqanah went up, and all his house, to sacrifice to Yahuah the sacrifice of the days and his vow.
22
But Channah did not go up, for she said to her ish, “Until the young man is weaned; then I will bring him, and he shall appear before the face of Yahuah and dwell there forever.”
23
And Elqanah her ish said to her, “Do what is good in your eyes. Remain until you have weaned him. Only may Yahuah establish His word.” And the ishah remained and nursed her son until she weaned him.
24
And when she had weaned him, she brought him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of Yahuah at Shiloh. And the young man was young.
25
And they slaughtered the bull and brought the young man to Eli.
26
And she said, “Please, my master! As your being lives, my master, I am the ishah who stood with you here, praying to Yahuah.
27
For this young man I prayed, and Yahuah gave me my request that I asked from Him.
28
And I also have lent him to Yahuah; all the days that he lives, he is lent to Yahuah.” And he bowed himself there to Yahuah.
