1
And it came to pass in those days that the Pelishtim gathered their camps for war, to fight against Yisra’el. And Akhish said to Daviyd, “Knowing, you shall surely know that you shall go out with me into the camp, you and your men.”
2
And Daviyd said to Akhish, “Therefore you shall know what your servant will do.” And Akhish said to Daviyd, “Therefore I will appoint you keeper of my head all the days.”
3
And Shemu’el had died, and all Yisra’el had mourned for him and buried him in HaRamah, in his own city. And Shaul had removed the mediums and the knowing ones from the land.
4
And the Pelishtim gathered themselves together and came and encamped at Shunem. And Shaul gathered all Yisra’el together, and they encamped at Gilboa.
5
And Shaul saw the camp of the Pelishtim, and he feared, and his heart trembled exceedingly.
6
And Shaul asked of Yahuah, but Yahuah did not answer him, neither by dreams, nor by the Urim, nor by prophets.
7
And Shaul said to his servants, “Seek for me an ishah, a mistress of an ov, and I will go to her and ask through her.” And his servants said to him, “See, there is an ishah, a mistress of an ov, at Ein-Dor.”
8
And Shaul disguised himself and clothed himself with other garments, and went, he and two ish with him. And they came to the ishah by night. And he said, “Please divine for me by the ov, and bring up for me whom I shall say to you.”
9
And the ishah said to him, “See, you know what Shaul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the knowing ones from the land. Why then are you laying a snare for my being, to put me to death?”
10
And Shaul swore to her by Yahuah, saying, “As Yahuah lives, no crookedness shall come upon you for this thing.”
11
And the ishah said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” And he said, “Bring up Shemu’el for me.”
12
And the ishah saw Shemu’el, and she cried out with a great voice. And the ishah spoke to Shaul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Shaul!”
13
And the king said to her, “Do not fear. For what did you see?” And the ishah said to Shaul, “I saw elohim ascending from the earth.”
14
And he said to her, “What is his form?” And she said, “An old ish is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe.” And Shaul knew that it was Shemu’el, and he bowed with his face to the earth and bowed himself.
15
And Shemu’el said to Shaul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” And Shaul said, “I am greatly distressed, for the Pelishtim are fighting against me, and Elohim has turned away from upon me and no longer answers me, neither by the hand of prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I called you, that you may cause me to know what I shall do.”
16
And Shemu’el said, “And why do you ask me, seeing that Yahuah has turned away from upon you and has become your adversary?
17
And Yahuah has done for Himself according to what He spoke by my hand. And Yahuah has torn the kingdom from your hand and given it to your neighbor, to Daviyd.
18
Because you did not listen to the voice of Yahuah and did not execute the burning of His anger against Amaleq, therefore Yahuah has done this thing to you this day.
19
And Yahuah will also give Yisra’el with you into the hand of the Pelishtim, and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me. Yahuah will also give the camp of Yisra’el into the hand of the Pelishtim.”
20
And Shaul hurried and fell with the fullness of his stature to the earth, and feared exceedingly because of the words of Shemu’el. And there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no bread all the day and all the night.
21
And the ishah came to Shaul and saw that he was exceedingly terrified, and she said to him, “See, your female servant has listened to your voice, and I placed my being in my palm and listened to your words that you spoke to me.
22
And now, please, you also listen to the voice of your female servant, and let me place before your face a morsel of bread, and eat, that there may be strength in you when you go on the way.”
23
But he refused and said, “I will not eat.” And his servants urged him, and the ishah also, and he listened to their voice. And he rose from the earth and sat upon the bed.
24
And the ishah had a fattened calf in the house, and she hurried and slaughtered it. And she took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread from it.
25
And she brought it near before Shaul and before his servants, and they ate. And they rose and went away that night.
