1
And it came to pass after the death of Shaul, when Daviyd had returned from striking Amaleq, that Daviyd remained two days in Tziqlag.
2
And it came to pass on the third day, and see, an ish came from the camp, from with Shaul, with his garments torn and earth upon his head. And it came to pass, when he came to Daviyd, that he fell to the earth and bowed himself.
3
And Daviyd said to him, “From where do you come?” And he said to him, “From the camp of Yisra’el I escaped.”
4
And Daviyd said to him, “What was the matter? Please declare it to me.” And he said, “The people fled from the battle, and many from the people also fell and died. And Shaul and Yonatan his son also died.”
5
And Daviyd said to the young man who declared it to him, “How do you know that Shaul and Yonatan his son are dead?”
6
And the young man who declared it to him said, “By chance I came upon Mount Gilboa, and see, Shaul was leaning upon his spear, and see, the chariots and horsemen were pressing closely upon him.
7
And he turned behind him and saw me and called to me. And I said, ‘Here I am.’
8
And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I said to him, ‘I am an Amaleqi.’
9
And he said to me, ‘Please stand over me and put me to death, for anguish has seized me, though all my being is still in me.’
10
And I stood over him and put him to death, for I knew that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was upon his head and the bracelet that was upon his arm, and I have brought them here to my master.”
11
And Daviyd seized his garments and tore them, and likewise all the men who were with him.
12
And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Shaul, and for Yonatan his son, and for the people of Yahuah, and for the house of Yisra’el, because they had fallen by the sword.
13
And Daviyd said to the young man who declared it to him, “From where are you?” And he said, “I am the son of a sojourner, an Amaleqi.”
14
And Daviyd said to him, “How were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the anointed of Yahuah?”
15
And Daviyd called one of the young men and said, “Draw near; fall upon him.” And he struck him, and he died.
16
And Daviyd said to him, “Your blood is upon your own head, for your mouth answered against you, saying, ‘I put to death the anointed of Yahuah.’”
17
And Daviyd lamented with this lamentation over Shaul and over Yonatan his son.
18
And he said to teach the sons of Yehudah the Bow. See, it is written in the sefer of Yashar:
19
“The beauty of Yisra’el is slain upon your high places. How the mighty have fallen!
20
Do not declare it in Gat; do not proclaim it in the streets of Ashqelon, lest the daughters of the Pelishtim rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.
21
Mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew and no rain upon you, nor fields of offerings, for there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Shaul, no longer anointed with oil.
22
From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Yonatan did not turn back, and the sword of Shaul did not return empty.
23
Shaul and Yonatan, beloved and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not separated. They were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions.
24
Daughters of Yisra’el, weep over Shaul, who clothed you in scarlet with delights, who caused ornaments of gold to go up upon your garments.
25
How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! Yonatan is slain upon your high places.
26
I am distressed for you, my brother Yonatan. You were exceedingly pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women.
27
How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished.”
