Book 2 — Chapter 4 — Agrippa Receives Kingship; Herod Antipas Is Exiled

After Tiberius dies, Gaius Caligula elevates Agrippa, grandson of Herod the Great, granting him territories previously held by Philip and Lysanias and later enlarging his rule. Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galil, envies Agrippa's royal title and travels with Herodias to seek similar honor. Agrippa accuses him before Gaius, and Antipas is stripped of his territory and sent into exile. His lands are added to Agrippa's dominion. Eusebius uses Yosephus to establish this political setting because the Herodian family repeatedly intersects with the apostolic narrative. The chapter also reinforces a theme of unstable client-kingship: Roman favor creates rulers and removes them just as quickly.
